Cubs acquired C Victor Caratini from the Braves for LHP James Russell and Emilio Bonifacio.
Caratini, a second-round pick in 2013, owns a .283/.377/.415 batting line with six home runs and 67 RBI over his first 145 professional games. The 20-year-old was ranked as the team's No. 8 prospect by Baseball America coming into the year, but he was somewhat expendable for the Braves due to the presence of Evan Gattis and Christian Bethancourt. He could turn into something interesting for Chicago, but he's still likely a couple of years away, especially considering he's still adjusting to being a full-time catcher.
Padres sent LHP Jason Lane outright to Triple-A El Paso.
He had been designated for assignment but has cleared waivers and will remain in the organization. Lane tossed six-plus innings of one-run ball in his first major league start on Monday.
Braves acquired LHP James Russell and INF/OF Emilio Bonifacio from the Cubs for C Victor Caratini.
Russell, 28, has posted a 3.51 ERA and 26/16 K/BB ratio over 33 1/3 innings this season. Oddly, he's been better against right-handed batters than left-handed hitters this year, though his career numbers say otherwise. Still, he should be a useful addition to Atlanta's bullpen.
Kevin Kouzmanoff will miss the rest of the season after requiring a second surgery on his back following a setback.
He wasn't a great back to return this year, anyway, but a second back surgery makes his long-term future pretty cloudy. Kouzmanoff will likely be non-tendered this winter.
Braves acquired INF/OF Emilio Bonifacio and LHP James Russell from the Cubs for C Victor Caratini.
Bonifacio has boosted his trade value since returning from the disabled list and owns a .279/.318/.373 batting line over 69 games this season to go along with 19 extra-base hits, 14 stolen bases, and 35 runs scored. It's not immediately clear how the Braves plan to use him, but he could push B.J. Upton to the bench at least some of the time.
Jurickson Profar (shoulder) won't play this season, reports the Fort Worth Star-Telegram's Jeff Wilson.
Profar is 10-14 days away from a throwing program, and he could play in the Arizona Fall League or winter ball. Fantasy owners should obviously continue to stash away the former No. 1 overall prospect in keeper formats.
Cubs placed LHP Felix Doubront on the 15-day disabled list with a calf strain.
We'd never -- ever! -- accuse a big league club of shenanigans, but... it's possible this is a phantom injury. Doubront, acquired from the Red Sox on Wednesday for a player to be named later or cash considerations, is out of options, and Chicago is happy enough with back-end-of-the-rotation options Kyle Hendricks and Tsuyoshi Wada at the moment. They can now delay Doubront's Chicago debut for a few weeks.
Astros acquired RHP Francis Martes from the Marlins in the Jarred Cosart deal.
Martes, 18, is a lottery ticket for the Astros. The righty holds a 3.74 ERA with 64 strikeouts over 79 1/3 innings in rookie ball and is obviously a long ways away from the majors.
