Donald Brown rushed four times for 12 yards Week 16 against the 49ers.
Brown was the clear second option to Branden Oliver, and even lost some pass-game work to Ronnie Brown late in the game. Brown is not a viable fantasy option even if Ryan Mathews (ankle) cannot play Week 17 against the Chiefs.
Branden Oliver rushed 13 times for 53 yards and caught three passes for 28 yards Week 16 against the 49ers.
Oliver dominated the early work for San Diego, out snapping the rest of the Chargers' running backs 20-to-8 in the first half. Oliver ceded work to Ronnie Brown in the second half with the Chargers in full comeback mode, but he still comfortably led the Chargers' backfield in touches. Oliver would be an intriguing play Week 17 against the Chiefs if Ryan Mathews (ankle) is unable to play.
Philip Rivers completed 33-of-54 passes for 356 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions Week 16 against the 49ers.
It was a tale of two halfs for Rivers. He started the game painfully slow, throwing two horrific interceptions and appearing to struggle with the various injuries that have hampered him the last several week. Rivers turned it on after the break, though, erasing a 21-point halftime deficit with three second-half touchdown passes. The performance was Rivers' best in months, but it is unlikely to repeat itself Week 17 against Kansas City. He will be no more than a QB2 for the season finale.
Vernon Davis did not receive a target Week 16 against the Chargers.
The goose egg is misleading, as Davis had a 63-yard touchdown catch negated by penalty in the third quarter. Davis caught a bullet from Kaepernick down the seam and bullied his way into the end zone, but the play was called back by a chop block. Even though it did not count, the long catch showed Davis still has the playmaking ability that made him a fantasy star.
Quinton Patton caught 2-of-6 targets for nine yards Week 16 against the Chargers.
Patton saw extended time with Michael Crabtree (knee) sidelined, but failed to do much with the work. Patton's most notable play of the game was an overtime fumble that set the Chargers up for a game-winning field goal.
Anquan Boldin caught 7-of-9 targets for 61 yards Week 16 against the Chargers.
With Michael Crabtree sidelined most of the game, Boldin was the clear No. 1 option in the passing game, garnering nine of the 49ers' 24 targets. Boldin did not make much happen with the looks, but did have a touchdown catch called back because of a holding call in the second quarter. With Crabtree's playing status unknown, Boldin will set up as a WR3 in the 49ers' season finale against the Cardinals.
Colin Kaepernick rushed seven times for 151 yards and a touchdown Week 16 against the Chargers, adding 114 yards and a score through the air.
With the 49ers dominating on the ground, Kaepernick was only asked to throw 24 times in a game San Francisco led 28-7 at halftime. Kaepernick's best play of the night was a 90-yard touchdown scramble in the third quarter. Kaepernick escaped pressure, put a move on Chargers S Eric Weddle and turned on the jets for the long score that appeared to put a stop to San Diego's comeback bid. It was all for nought, however, as two Philip Rivers' fourth-quarter touchdown passes and a Quinton Patton overtime fumble sealed the 49ers' fate. Despite the loss, Kaepernick appeared more willing to run for the second week in a row, and clearly showed the athleticism that made him feared still exists. He is not a good real-life quarterback, but Kaepernick can be a quality fantasy option as long as he continues to run.
Frank Gore rushed 26 times for 158 yards and a touchdown Week 16 against the Chargers.
The highlight of the evening was a first-quarter run in which Gore rumbled through several Chargers on his way to a 52-yard touchdown. Gore racked up 129 yards before halftime and looked unstoppable early in the game. He slowed down in the second half, but Gore still had enough juice to post his highest single-game rushing total since 2009. Gore will likely struggle Week 17 against the Cardinals' stout rush defense, but he showed on Saturday he still has plenty left in the tank.
