Cardinals optioned RHP Sam Tuivailala to Triple-A Memphis.

The move clears a spot for Tuesday's starter, Tyler Lyons, on the active roster. Tuivailala was just called up on Sunday and allowed one run over two innings in his lone appearance.

Cardinals recalled RHP Tyler Lyons from Triple-A Memphis.

Tim Cooney got the first opportunity as a fill-in option for Adam Wainwright (Achilles) last week, but now it's Lyons' turn, as he'll start Tuesday night against the Cubs. The 27-year-old had a 2.91 ERA and 26/6 K/BB ratio over his first 21 2/3 innings with Memphis this season and should be relevant in NL-only leagues if he keeps the spot. Marco Gonzales could be a candidate to join the rotation later this month.

Nationals prospect right-hander Reynaldo Lopez is expected to join High-A Potomac this week.

Lopez, 21, owns a 2.17 ERA with 7.5 K/9 and 2.9 BB/9 over his first 18 starts and five relief appearances in pro ball. Baseball America ranked him as the No. 49 prospect in the game earlier this year. The move to High-A should be a good test for both him and Lucas Giolito.

Nationals prospect right-hander Lucas Giolito is expected to join High-A Potomac this week.

Giolito has been pitching at the team's spring training facility in Viera, Florida over the past month and now he's ready to report to a minor league affiliate. The 20-year-old has emerged as one of the game's top pitching prospects since his Tommy John surgery, posting a 2.20 ERA and a 110/28 K/BB ratio in 98 innings across 20 starts with Class A Hagerstown last season.

Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times speculates that Alex Cobb has a partial elbow ligament tear.

It's important to note that the Rays have not made any sort of announcement on Cobb's status, so Topkin categorized this as "informed speculation" after his recent setback and a new MRI. The belief is that the Rays will wait to see how he responds to rest and treatment, but if Topkin is correct, Tommy John surgery could very well be in his future. Stay tuned.

Marlins released C Jarrod Saltalamacchia.

This confirms a report from CBS Sports' Jon Heyman. The Marlins expressed optimism for finding a trade partner after they designated Saltalamacchia for assignment last week, but nothing has materialized. This means that the Marlins will be responsible for the remainder of his three-year, $21 million contract and he'll be free to sign with another club at the major league minimum. He should have no shortage of suitors as a free agent. The Royals, Rays, and Diamondbacks are among the teams who have been mentioned as possibilities.

The Indians could call up left-hander Bruce Chen or right-hander Shaun Marcum from Triple-A Columbus to pitch Saturday against the Twins.

The Indians need a fill-in option with TJ House (shoulder) on the disabled list and Zach McAllister appears to have found a home in the bullpen, so Chen and Marcum are the most realistic options. Chen owns a 1.74 over five starts in Triple-A while Marcum has a 2.00 ERA over three starts. The Indians would have to make a move to add either of them to the 40-man roster.

Joe Blanton has a May 15 opt-out in his minor league contract with the Royals.

Tim Dierkes of MLB Trade Rumors reports that Blanton has turned down offers from Asian clubs over the past few weeks and wants to return to MLB. The 34-year-old owns a 3.71 ERA and 20/7 K/BB ratio in 26 2/3 innings over four starts and one relief appearance with the Royals' Triple-A affiliate. He didn't pitch in the majors last year.
