Alex Wilson got five outs for his first save Thursday in the Tigers' 9-8 win over the Orioles.

Wilson had just two holds all year, so he was never seen as a setup man in front of Joakim Soria. Nevertheless, he was Brad Ausmus's choice to close tonight. He likely would have started the ninth had everything gone as planned, but after Al Alburquerque allowed two of the first three batters to reach in the eighth, Ausmus decided to go to Wilson right then. Wilson allowed one of the inherited runners to score, but finished the Orioles off from there. He might be the favorite for saves in the Tigers pen, at least until he blows one.

Miguel Gonzalez surrendered five runs and 10 hits in 3 1/3 innings Thursday against the Tigers.

It's the third time in six starts that Gonzalez has allowed at least five runs. On the other hand, he's pitched well and won each of the other three outings in that span. He's not all that much of a fantasy starter, but he's still helping the Orioles.
Jul 30 - 11:30 PM

Chris Davis went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, four RBI and a walk Thursday against the Tigers.

Davis has six homers in 13 games since the All-Star break and 25 overall. It's not nearly the same kind of season he had in 2013, not with his .244 average, but it's is a big improvement on what he did last year.
Jul 30 - 11:28 PM

Rusney Castillo went 2-for-4 and hit his second homer Thursday as the Red Sox topped the White Sox 8-2.

Castillo wasn't doing much in Triple-A, but he's gone 5-for-12 in four games against the White Sox since being recalled Monday. He'll be an everyday guy until Mookie Betts returns and probably beyond, if he keeps hitting.
Jul 30 - 11:22 PM

Knuckleballer Steven Wright yielded two runs in seven innings and struck out eight in a win the White Sox on Thursday.

Wright should have a chance to sink or swim as a starter these next couple of months. There's little reason to be excited about him, but it'd be a nice lift for the Red Sox if he shows he can be a cheap fourth starter going forward.
Jul 30 - 11:21 PM

Chris Sale was lit up by the Red Sox on Thursday, surrendering seven runs and 12 hits in five innings.

That's the most hits he's even given up in a start. It follows an outing just 11 days ago in which he gave up 11 hits. Still, we wouldn't expect that this is the start of a trend for Sale. He still struck out seven and didn't give up any homers tonight.
Jul 30 - 11:17 PM

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that rival executives view the Yankees as the favorite to land Craig Kimbrel from the Padres.

The Yankees are in the market for both rotation and bullpen help. Kimbrel would join Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller to form perhaps the finest late-inning trio in all of baseball. The Padres are currently listening to offers on many of their players and expected to make big moves before Friday's deadline.
Jul 30 - 11:16 PM

Despite facing Chris Sale, David Ortiz went 3-for-3 with a double, two RBI and a walk Thursday against the White Sox.

All three hits came off Sale. Ortiz has had more success lately, but even so, he entered the game with a .162/.182/.276 line against left-handers this season. His overall average is up to .247, which is the highest it's been since early May.
