Angels transferred RHP Keynan Middleton from the 10-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for Jose Briceno. Middleton is out for the season following Tommy John surgery.

Angels purchased the contract of C Jose Briceno from Triple-A Salt Lake.

Briceno was acquired along with Andrelton Simmons in the deal that sent Sean Newcomb to the Braves. He's a defense-first catcher who will back up Martin Maldonado while Rene Rivera (knee) is out.
May 20 - 1:58 PM

Angels placed C Rene Rivera on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to May 17, with right knee inflammation.

It's unclear at this point how long he might be sidelined. Jose Briceño is up to back up Martin Maldonado.

Jung Ho Kang has been playing in extended spring training games.

Kang is easing back into things, going 5-7 innings at a time and only playing every other day for now. He hit a home run in one of the games recently and Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said all the reports he's received on the infielder have been positive. When Kang will be activated by the Pirates remains to be seen, but it's looking like he'll be a factor for them at some point this season.

Royals signed RHP Michael Mariot to a minor league contract.

Mariot will be assigned to Double-A Northwest Arkansas after being released by the Padres earlier this month following a 12.15 ERA over 10 relief appearances at Triple-A El Paso. The 29-year-old broke into the majors with the Royals but hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2016.

Anthony DeSclafani (oblique) will need 1-2 more rehab starts before joining the Reds' rotation.

DeSclafani allowed two earned runs while striking out eight over five innings in his second rehab start with Double-A Pensacola on Saturday. He's given up just the two earned runs and has a 12/1 K/BB ratio over eight frames in his two rehab outings so far. If DeSclafani pitches well again the next time out, he could be activated in late May. The Reds haven't decided yet who he'll bump from the rotation.

Nelson Cruz is not in the Mariners' lineup Sunday.

Cruz has dealt with a bruised foot recently and was hit on the elbow by a pitch Saturday, so it's a good time to get him a little rest. Kyle Seager is in the designated hitter spot and Gordon Beckham is at third base.

Rangers manager Jeff Banister said Sunday that either Yohander Mendez or Austin Bibens-Dirkx will likely start Thursday against the Royals.

They'll be taking Matt Moore's (knee) spot. Mendez is the more interesting of the two, but he's struggled at Triple-A Round Rock this season (5.65 ERA) and would be too risky of a streamer.
