Reds recalled RHP Curtis Partch from Triple-A Louisville.
The Reds' bullpen has thrown 15 innings over the last two days, so they needed reinforcements. Partch has tossed 4 1/3 scoreless innings during his brief time with the Reds this season.
Reds recalled RHP Carlos Contreras from Triple-A Louisville.
Contreras has allowed one run over 4 1/3 relief innings for the Reds this season. He'll be used in middle relief.
Reds placed 2B Brandon Phillips on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 10, with a torn ligament in his left thumb.
Phillips will undergo surgery and is expected to be sidelined around six weeks. Ramon Santiago is at second base for the Reds Friday and should see the bulk of the starts there unless the club acquires someone that's currently outside the organization.
Reds optioned C Tucker Barnhart to Triple-A Louisville.
Barnhart has hit only .152/.222/.242 in 12 games for the Reds this season. The club is only going with two catchers even though Brayan Pena is expected to see the bulk of the starts at first base with Joey Votto (quad) out.
Matt LaPorta has retired from baseball.
The former first-round pick never panned out in the majors and has now decided to open up 18 Pie Five Pizza places throughout Tampa beginning in early 2015. LaPorta, 29, hit just .238/.301/.393 over parts of four seasons in the big leagues.
Cubs activated 2B Darwin Barney from the paternity leave list.
Barney was away for a couple days while his wife delivered the couple's third child. With the Cubs deciding to keep Arismendy Alcantara around, Barney's playing time could be limited.
Yankees recalled RHP Matt Daley from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Daley has a 4.85 ERA in 13 innings this season with the Yanks. He'll be used in the middle innings.
Yankees designated RHP Jim Miller for assignment.
It's the second time over the last year that he's been designated for assignment by the Bombers. Miller has allowed six runs over 2 2/3 relief innings in the majors this season. He figures to pass through waivers unclaimed.
