Tyler Saladino went 2-for-4 with a game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth as the White Sox edged the Cubs 5-4 on Monday.

Saladino is outhitting Brett Lawrie over the last month and is the superior defensive second baseman, so maybe it's time to give him a crack at the starting job. He wouldn't do much for fantasy leaguers if it happens, but as far as the White Sox are concerned, he just needs to be a better player than Lawrie. Right now, Saladino has a .722 OPS in 130 AB, while Lawrie is at .723 in 351 AB.

Jake Arrieta surrendered four runs in six innings Monday in a no-decision against the White Sox.

It looked like it'd be a second straight fine outing for Arrieta, but then Todd Frazier connected on a three-run homer with two outs in the sixth, ruining his night. The Cubs went on to lose the game, the fourth straight time they've lost one of Arrieta's starts. In fact, they're just 3-7 in his outings since their streak of 23 straight wins with him on the mound ended in May.

Chase Anderson lasted just five frames but picked up a win Monday, permitting two runs in a 7-2 victory over the Diamondbacks.

Anderson recorded five strikeouts, but he allowed seven hits and one walk and got his pitch count up to 93 after his five frames, necessitating an early exit. Of course, an early exit is nothing new for Anderson, as he hasn't gone more than five innings in a start since June 8. His next outing will come against the Pirates.

Braden Shipley's major league debut didn't go well, as he allowed six runs over 5 1/3 innings in a loss to the Brewers.

Shipley served up a homer to the second batter he faced -- Scooter Gennett -- and wound up allowing three longballs on the night. He also walked four batters and gave up eight hits overall. It was a forgettable major league debut, but Shipley should get another shot this weekend against the Dodgers.

Javier Baez finished 3-for-4 with a homer and a doubles Monday against the White Sox.

Most of Baez's success this year has come off lefties, so it was nice to see him collect extra-base hits against a pair of righties in this one. It could help him earn some more playing time.

Addison Russell went 0-for-3 with a walk Monday against the White Sox.

Russell started at shortstop tonight after leaving Sunday's game with a bruised left heel.

Scooter Gennett singled and ripped a solo home run in Monday's victory over the Diamondbacks.

Gennett got the scoring going with a deep blast to center field in the first inning. It was one of four dingers the Brewers had on the night, as Jonathan Villar, Martin Maldonado and Andy Wilkins also went deep. Gennett has already tied his career high with nine home runs.
Jul 26 - 12:08 AM

Paul Goldschmidt picked up three hits in five trips to the plate in Monday's loss to the Brewers.

All three of his base knocks were singles. Goldschmidt was scuffling coming into this one with just two hits in his last 16 at-bats, but the three-hit night pushes his season line back to .294/.412/.506.
