Kyle Hendricks walked four but did not allow a run over three innings in Saturday's split-squad Cactus League game against the Reds.

Hendricks managed to work past his control issues to toss three scoreless frames, scattering three hits and striking out one along the way. The National League's ERA leader from 2016 has been back to his old tricks since the start of camp and currently boasts a 2.16 ERA across 16 2/3 spring innings.

Robert Stephenson surrendered four runs on six hits over four-plus innings in Saturday's split-squad Cactus League date with the Cubs.

Stephenson struck out three and walked two on the afternoon. The Cubs knocked him for two runs in the first inning, later coming back around to weigh down his pitching line with another two runs in the fifth inning. In six appearances covering 16 innings this spring, the 24-year-old Stephenson owns an uninspiring 5.63 ERA. Reds manager Bryan Price said earlier this spring that he could make the team as a member of the bullpen even if he is not able to secure a spot in the Opening Day rotation.

Andrew Toles rapped a grand slam off Jesse Hahn in Saturday's Cactus League win over the A's.

Toles came through for the granny against Hahn with the bases loaded and one out in the fourth inning. That well-timed home run was his first of the spring. He is set to start in left field for the Dodgers during the coming campaign. In a utility role last season, Toles slashed .314/.365/.505 with three homers and 19 RBI across 105 at-bats.

Matt Chapman went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run in Saturday's Cactus League loss to the Dodgers.

Chapman whacked a three-run home run off Rich Hill in the first inning. That bomb was his second of the spring. The 23-year-old third baseman has shown big-time power in the minors, swatting 36 homers and driving in 96 runs across 514 at-bats split between Double- and Triple-A in 2016. Trevor Plouffe is already locked in at third for the A's, meaning that Chapman can probably expect to be shifted down to the minors in the coming days. A midseason call-up is certainly in play, here.
Mar 25 - 8:15 PM

Trevor Plouffe was pulled from Saturday's Cactus League game against the Reds after tweaking his abductor muscle.

In layman's terms, he's dealing with a hip injury. Plouffe went 2-for-2 with a single and a triple before exiting in the sixth inning. Jordan Tarsovich played the rest of the game at third base. Until the A's pass along an update, we'll consider Plouffe day-to-day.

Rich Hill allowed four runs on four hits over 3 2/3 innings in Saturday's Cactus League game against the A's.

Control was an issue for Hill in this one. He walked four on the afternoon. While he has struggled to an 8.03 ERA in five starts during spring action, this should not be a major concern for interested fantasy parties. Hill put up a 2.12 ERA in 20 starts between the A's and Dodgers during the 2016 season. Just about the only downside to the last campaign was that a pesky blister kept him out of action for extended stretches.

Andre Ethier (back) won't resume baseball activities until the first week of April.

The decision was made after Ethier met with a back specialist on Saturday. Ethier will obviously open the year on the disabled list but manager Dave Roberts said he doesn't anticipate the injury being a "6-8 week thing." The injury-prone Ethier was limited to just 16 games last season and is now facing another extended absence.
Mar 25 - 8:02 PM

Jesse Hahn had nothing in Saturday's Cactus League game against the Dodgers, surrendering seven runs (five earned) on eight hits over 3 1/3 innings.

Ouch, just ouch. This makes two consecutive starts in which Hahn has surrendered seven runs. Five of those seven runs on Saturday touched home in a nightmare fourth inning which saw Hahn cough up a grand slam to Andrew Toles and a subsequent solo home run to Justin Turner. In 15 1/3 frames (five appearances) this spring, he is the owner of a dreadful 8.80 ERA.
