Yankees prospect catcher Luis Torrens went 2-for-5 for short season-A Staten Island on Friday, raising his season line to .376/.411/.565.

The 18-year old Torrens has more than lived up to expectations, and is third in the NY-Penn Leauge in batting average, sixth in OBP, and seventh in slugging percentage despite being one of seven 18-year old hitters in the league. He has the potential to be a middle-of-the-order bat for the Yankees, but needs at least three more seasons to work on his defense and improve his hitting.
Jul 26 - 10:48 AM

White Sox second base prospect Micah Johnson went 2-for-4 with a double for Triple-A Charlotte on Friday.

Johnson has stayed white-hot in July, hitting .370/.418/.507 with three doubles, two triples, one home run, and five stolen bases. He lacks power, but has the speed to steal 30-plus bases and could hit .280 with 20-30 doubles. The White Sox seem reluctant to replace Gordon Beckham and his .224/.272/.355 season line, but Johnson's hot hitting may change their mind.
Jul 26 - 10:40 AM

Indians prospect outfielder Bradley Zimmer went 3-for-5 with two doubles and a stolen base for short season-A Mahoning Valley on Friday.

Zimmer has put up a .287/.364/.426 line with eight doubles, one triple, and one home run during his time in the NY-Penn League. He has not flashed the power that made him a first round pick, but he has more than held his own and should start 2015 with Low-A Lake County.
Jul 26 - 10:31 AM

Red Sox prospect Mookie Betts went 4-for-5 with a double and a walk for Triple-A Pawtucket on Friday.

Betts has hit .370/.414/.519 over six games since his demotion to Triple-A, and has a .333/.422/.462 over 29 games in Triple-A. Betts has played center- and right-field since his demotion, and it looks like he will be an outfielder for the duration of the season. His long-term role is muddled due to the lack of a clear opening in Boston and their already-loaded infield.
Jul 26 - 10:25 AM

Diamondbacks third base prospect Brandon Drury went 3-for-5 with a double for High-A Visalia on Friday.

Drury is having a great year in 2014, hitting .294/.358/.505 with 33 doubles, one triple, and 17 home runs. Once viewed as a throw-in as part of the Justin Upton/Martin Prado trade, Drury has blossomed into a legitimate third base prospect who has the potential to hit .300 with 10-15 home runs and 30-plus doubles.
Jul 26 - 10:20 AM

Cubs shortstop prospect Addison Russell went 2-for-5 with two home runs for Double-A Tennessee on Friday.

Russell has hit .250/.297/.517 since being traded to the Cubs organization, but has ripped five home runs. Javier Baez has been spending time at second base, which strongly indicates that the Cubs front office views Russell as their shortstop of the future. Starlin Castro has shortstop locked down in Chicago, and the off-season will likely be filled with trade rumors of ways to open a hole for Chicago's biggest acquisition.
Jul 26 - 10:17 AM

Nationals right-handed pitching prospect tossed six shutout innings for Low-A Hagerstown on Friday, striking out seven batters while allowing one hit.

Giolito's dominating performance intimidated the weak Kannapolis lineup, giving him what was likely his best start of the season. The first batter of the game picked up an infield single, then Giolito got the next 18 batters out. Giolito is making a strong case that he is the top pitching prospect in the minor leagues, and his healthy and dominant 2014 has been a great sign.
Jul 26 - 10:12 AM

Alberto Callaspo (hamstring) will play in a minor league rehab game with High-A Stockton on Saturday.

If all goes well, he's still looking at a return to the Athletics on Sunday. The veteran infielder has been sidelined since July 11 with a strained hamstring.
