Sam Fuld announced Friday that he'll undergo season-ending surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff.

He's scheduled to have the procedure done on May 18. Fuld suffered the injury late in spring training. He'll miss the entire 2016 campaign and hope to come back strong next year.

Grant Balfour announced his retirement from professional baseball on Friday.

The 38-year-old hurler last pitched with the Rays in 2015. He finishes a 12-year major league career with a 3.49 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 571/252 K/BB ratio over 539 2/3 innings. He racked up 84 saves in his career, including 38 with the Athletics during the 2013 season in which he was elected to his first and only All-Star game.

Rockies optioned OF Brandon Barnes to Triple-A Albuquerque.

He became the odd-man out with Charlie Blackmon returning from the disabled list. Barnes hit .194/.242/.323 with four RBI in 31 at-bats with the big league club. He should find his way back to Colorado again this season.
Apr 29 - 6:43 PM

Carlos Gonzalez is not in the Rockies starting lineup on Friday.

It's just a regular day of rest for Gonzalez against opposing left-hander Robbie Ray. He's off to a nice start at the plate in 2016, slashing .310/.355/.529 with four homers and 12 RBI in 21 games.
Apr 29 - 6:41 PM

Rockies activated OF Charlie Blackmon from the 15-day disabled list.

Blackmon missed two weeks of action with a toe injury but is back at his regular spot atop the Rockies lineup on Friday. Prior to his injury, Blackmon was hitting just .185/.241/.333 with no homers and three RBI in his first eight games.

Jon Lester struck out 10 batters while yielding just one run over seven innings in Friday's 6-1 win over the Braves.

Lester ran into trouble in his final frame, loading the bases with nobody out with the help of a bunt that he misplayed. However, he got back-to-back strikeouts and then a groundout to escape trouble. Although he wasn't credited with a victory, it was another terrific showing for the veteran lefty. Lester has recorded 10 strikeouts in two of his last three starts and will take a 1.83 ERA and 33/7 K/BB ratio into next week's showdown with the Pirates in Pittsburgh.
Apr 29 - 6:03 PM

Aaron Blair allowed just one run over six frames but was hung with a no-decision in Friday's loss to the Cubs.

Blair took a no-hitter into the bottom of the fifth before Javier Baez led off with a double. The Cubs scored their long run off Blair that inning before the offense came alive late. Blair allowed just two hits on the day, although he walked three and struck out just three. He's given up just four runs over his first 11 1/3 big league innings but also has a 4/5 K/BB ratio. Blair gets the Mets on the road next week.
Apr 29 - 5:59 PM

Matt Szczur made his lone plate appearance Friday count, smacking a grand slam in a victory over the Braves.

The Cubs had taken a lead on an Anthony Rizzo RBI single just before Szczur, who blew things open with a drive into the Wrigley Field bleachers in left field. Szczur has been a quality extra for the Cubbies this month, hitting .333/.400/.593 across 27 at-bats.
