Brendan Ryan limped off the field in Wednesday's Grapefruit League game with a possible leg injury.
Uh oh. Ryan apparently had to be carried down the dugout stairs. Speculation on Twitter is focusing on Ryan's knee and/or ankle. He was only starting on Wednesday because regular shortstop Didi Gregorius is currently nursing a wrist injury. We'll update this one as news becomes available.
Joe Kelly (biceps) pitched four innings in a minor league game on Wednesday.
Kelly threw 65 pitches. This was his first game action in almost two weeks. He'll likely need another few starts to build up his arm strength before he's ready to contribute to the Red Sox. Prior to the injury, Kelly had given up 17 hits in just seven and a third spring innings. He pitched to a 4.20 ERA and 1.349 WHIP over 91 innings between the Cardinals and the Red Sox last season.
According to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman, Carlos Rendon (knee) is expected to miss about three weeks.
The best news here is that Rendon will not require surgery on his sprained left MCL. With rest and rehab, Heyman writes, Rendon should miss three weeks (give or take). The infielder injured his knee on March 9. Nationals GM Mike Rizzo said, "There's nothing seriously wrong, and it should remedy itself. Some turn the corner quickly and with other guys it takes a few weeks. But [Rendon] will be fine."
Astros prospect Kyle Smith underwent Tommy John surgery recently, according to the Houston Chronicle's Jose de Jesus Ortiz.
Smith, 22, had a 3.96 ERA and a 127/37 K/BB ratio in 122 2/3 innings last year between high-A Lancaster and Double-A Corpus Christi. The Astros got him from the Royals in 2013 in a trade for Justin Maxwell.
Braves claimed LHP Andrew McKirahan off waivers from the Marlins.
McKirahan was a Rule 5 pick. The Braves were among a number of teams reportedly interested in the lefty. The 25-year-old posted a 3.00 ERA in nine innings prior to being placed on waivers by the Marlins. He's not the sexiest name, but could offer relatively immediate help in the bullpen.
Eddie Butler (shoulder) took part in long toss drills on Wednesday.
Butler left Monday's Cactus League start after feeling fatigue in his right shoulder. It's a good sign that he's already starting to throw again. Butler has a history of shoulder problems. There's no timetable as to when he'll take the mound again. He was in the hunt for a rotation spot, but an arm injury at this point might take him out of the running.
Cubs optioned OF Junior Lake to Triple-A Iowa.
Lake hit just .211/.246/.351 in 326 plate appearances for the Cubs last season. He'll serve as organizational depth.
Cubs optioned LHP Zach Rosscup to Triple-A Iowa.
Rosscup struck out 12 in nine spring innings. He was shelled during several cups of coffee for the Cubs last season, but has put up nice minor league numbers. The 27-year-old will continue to refine his game in the minors.
