Neil Ramirez (triceps) expects to be activated from the disabled list when his 15 days are up.

Ramirez is out with a sore right triceps muscle that he said "started creeping in the last couple outings." He's feeling much better, though, after getting on a program with Cubs athletic trainer PJ Mainville and strength coach Tim Buss. "I've been feeling better this year than I have in the past couple years, so everything I've been doing is starting to help out," Ramirez said. "I want to finish the year strong and build up strength." Ramirez had been optioned to Triple-A before it was rescinded and he was placed on the DL. However, it's possible he'll return with the big club since he got two weeks of rest, which was the team's primary goal in sending him down.

Johnny Cueto hung in tough in a low-scoring game against the Marlins on Thursday, limiting the opposition to one run over seven innings en route to his 12th win in the Reds' 3-1 victory.

Cueto was on the hook for a loss going into the seventh inning, but a fielding error by Jordany Valdespin opened up an opportunity for the Reds to tie the game and then take the lead. Cueto allowed just four hits and a walk while striking out nine. He now sports a 2.05 ERA, a 0.92 WHIP, and a 166/43 K/BB ratio. Cueto will take on the Indians in a road start next Tuesday.

Jason Vargas (appendectomy) will rejoin the Royals' rotation on Saturday in Oakland.

Vargas threw 60 pitches in a four-inning simulated game Tuesday, clearing the way for his return. The lefty boasts a 3.31 ERA for the Royals this season but makes for a sketchy fantasy play Saturday given that he'll surely be on a pitch count and will be facing a difficult lineup.
Jul 31 - 10:12 PM

Tom Koehler performed well in Thursday's start against the Marlins, but took a loss after allowing two unearned runs in seven innings.

Both runs, as it happens, crossed the plate in the top of the seventh following a Jordany Valdespin error to begin the inning. Koehler to that point had shut the Reds out, even outdueling Johnny Cueto. Overall, the right-hander allowed five hits, walked none, and struck out three. He owns a 3.70 ERA with a 1.22 WHIP and a 100/47 K/BB ratio. Koehler will try to keep the strong pitching going when he takes on the Pirates in Pittsburgh next week.
Jul 31 - 10:08 PM

The Athletics are expected to keep Jason Hammel in their rotation over Jesse Chavez.

Hammel has a 9.53 ERA and 2.12 WHIP in four starts with Oakland, but the A's think he's capable of turning things around. Chavez boasts a 3.44 ERA and 119/41 K/BB ratio over 125 2/3 innings this season, but he's struggled in July and could be tiring after years of pitching mostly as a reliever. The 30-year-old is dropped in mixed leagues.
Jul 31 - 10:07 PM

Ryan Ludwick proved to be the difference, driving in the go-ahead run with a single in the eighth inning as the Reds went on to defeat the Marlins on Thursday.

The game was 1-0 in favor of the Marlins entering the frame, but the Reds staged a rally against a tiring Tom Koehler and the Marlins' bullpen. The Reds tied the game at 1-1 on a sacrifice fly. Ludwick then put them ahead with a two-run single to center field. Ludwick has mostly been quiet at the plate this year, Thursday notwithstanding, as he holds a .261/.325/.391 slash line with six home runs and 27 RBI.
Jul 31 - 10:05 PM

Aroldis Chapman worked around a ninth-inning walk to grab his 24th save of the season in Thursday's win against the Marlins.

Chapman walked Casey McGehee to begin the bottom of the ninth, but instantly erased his mistake with a ground ball double play. He fanned Marcell Ozuna to end the ballgame, extending his major league record for consecutive appearances with a strikeout to 46. Chapman is 24-for-26 in save opportunities with a 2.10 ERA and a 68/12 K/BB ratio.
Jul 31 - 10:01 PM

Giancarlo Stanton homered for the 25th time this season, his only hit in four at-bats in a losing effort against the Reds on Thursday.

Stanton put the Marlins up 1-0 in the first inning with a line drive over the left field fence off of Johnny Cueto. It was the only damage the Marlins could do against the Reds' right-hander. Stanton has homered in back-to-back games, and has a total of four since the All-Star break. He's slashing .293/.394/.541 with 72 RBI on the season.
