Frank Gore managed six yards on four carries and missed his lone target in the Colts' third preseason game.
The Colts' line managed no push against Philadelphia's underrated defensive front, so Gore went nowhere during his short stay on the field. More troubling, the Colts lost stud LG Jack Mewhort to a season-ending torn ACL. We have liked Gore as a value pick all offseason, but that is contingent on Indy's offense rebounding and Andrew Luck staying healthy. The line is a real issue.
Ravens coach John Harbaugh said Saturday night he believes Kenneth Dixon's knee injury is "not overly serious."
The Ravens are sending Dixon for a Sunday MRI to be sure. Before going down, Dixon looked terrific with 41 yards on six carries, and afterward a Ravens beat writer said Dixon has looked like one of Baltimore's top runners in camp. Dixon appeared to have received a depth chart promotion, running with the first-team offense. He should be considered questionable for Week 1.
Rishard Matthews caught 1-of-2 targets for 19 yards in the Titans' third preseason game Saturday night.
Matthews' one grab was good for a first down on 3rd-and-10 late in the first quarter, and he had an end-zone target bounce off his fingertips in the second. Still, he saw inconsistent work with the first-team offense, often times losing snaps to both Harry Douglas and Andre Johnson. It is possible Tennessee just wanted to get the vets work with the first-team offense, but it is a concerning development with Tajae Sharpe seemingly establishing himself as the No. 1 receiver. Matthews still should open the season as a starter, but his target upside suddenly appears much smaller.
Colts RB Jordan Todman managed two yards on three carries in Saturday night's third preseason game.
Todman worked deep in the rotation, playing behind Frank Gore, Josh Ferguson, and Robert Turbin. Although Todman looks low on the depth chart, he is a core special teamer and that may save him. He recovered a blocked punt for a touchdown, wrestling the ball away from an Eagle at the bottom of the pile.
Tajae Sharpe caught 1-of-4 targets for 60 yards Saturday night against the Raiders.
Sharpe did not have an efficient night, but he made the most of his one catch, making Sean Smith pay for trying to jump a route by taking a short pass 60 yards down the four-yard line. DeMarco Murray punched it in two plays later. More importantly, Sharpe once again worked as the clear starter and played ahead of Rishard Matthews in jumbo sets to open the game. Locked into a big role, Sharpe is a nice pick in the double-digit rounds.
Colts RB Robert Turbin rushed four times for 24 yards and caught his lone target for a gain of six in Saturday night's third preseason game.
Turbin entered before Josh Ferguson, but saw most of his action after Ferguson was done for the night. Ferguson didn't capitalize on the increased opportunity, so Turbin's No. 2 back job is likely safe. He had a long touchdown run negated by a Phillip Dorsett holding penalty, but it still went in the books as a 12-yard gain. Most importantly for Turbin, he is capable in pass protection. That gives him a decisive edge on Ferguson.
Bilal Powell rushed four times for 18 yards in Saturday's preseason game, catching 3-of-3 targets for 16 yards.
Powell got two touches on the Jets' opening series, but the first quarter mostly belonged to Matt Forte in his preseason debut. Forte finished with 12 touches to Powell's seven. That ratio could be similar during the regular season. Powell finishes August with 11 carries for 54 yards and three grabs for 16. He's an RB4/5 who would be a lot more valuable were Forte to go down with injury.
Marcus Mariota completed 9-of-16 passes for 170 yards and rushed three times for 20 yards in the Titans' third preseason game.
The Titans did a good job utilizing bootlegs with Mariota Saturday night, and he made a couple nice plays on the move. He also showed off his scrambling ability, rushing for a big gain down the right sideline he ended by pitching the ball to Harry Douglas for several extra yards. Unlikely to play next week, Mariota finishes the preseason 23-for-31 for 319 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. He added 33 yards on five carries. Mariota is a great upside pick in the 12th round.
