Nationals pitching prospect Paolo Espino looked sharp in Sunday's win for Triple-A Syracuse, allowing just four hits over seven shutout innings.

Espino began the year with Double-A Harrisburg but was promoted to Syracuse when Taylor Jordan got called up to Washington. The 28-year-old helped his own cause Sunday by bashing a three-run homer. Espino, who was winless in his previous eight outings, has now thrown over 1,000 innings in his minor league career.

Reds placed C Devin Mesoraco on the 15-day disabled list with a left hip impingement.

After seven weeks of trying to keep Mesoraco active despite the hip injury, the Reds have finally given in and thrown him on the disabled list. He hadn't made a start behind the plate since April 11 and when he tried to squat last week, he felt renewed discomfort in his hip. Mesoraco is now considering season-ending surgery.

David Wright is headed to California to have his back examined by a specialist.

Wright was diagnosed last week with spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the spinal column, and the veteran third baseman is trying to figure out a treatment plan. More should be known in the next couple of days. It's probably going to be a while before we see him return to the Mets' active roster.
