The Montreal Alouettes own free agent DE Michael Sam's CFL rights.
The Alouettes have contacted Sam about taking his talents north of the border. To this point, Sam isn't interested in playing in the CFL. He remains committed to finding a job either on an NFL 53-man roster or practice squad.
Patriots claimed S Don Jones off waivers from the Dolphins.
Jones, a 2013 seventh-rounder, doesn't play much defense, but is a special teams contributor. The Patriots now have six safeties on their 53-man roster.
FOX Sports' Jay Glazer reports the Raiders will start Derek Carr in Week 1 against the Jets, and have sent Matt Schaub to the bench.
The coaches informed the players on Monday. It's the right call after Schaub had a dumpster fire of a preseason, and Carr sizzled with a 105.2 passer rating on 45 throws. With Schaub nursing a sore elbow in the preseason finale, Carr carved up the Seahawks for 143 yards and three scores on 13 passes. The current regime in Oakland needs to win football games now, and Carr gives the Raiders their best chance at that. It's a tough first test for Carr on the road against a ferocious defensive line. But he should find windows to throw into against what is arguably the worst cornerback group in the league.
Jets waived ILB Jeremiah George.
George was the 154th pick in May's draft. The highly athletic Iowa State product loses his roster spot to WR Walter Powell, who was claimed off waivers.
Jets DB Antonio Allen (concussion) is expected to be ready for Week 1.
Allen has resumed practicing after suffering a concussion in New York's third preseason game. A converted safety, Allen may start at cornerback against the Raiders with Dee Milliner still nursing a high ankle sprain.
Browns signed WR Charles Johnson to their practice squad.
He obviously passed through waivers unclaimed -- no other NFL teams wanted him -- but the Browns still see potential here. If LaRon Byrd or Taylor Gabriel fails to impress this regular season, Johnson could get an in-season callup.
Lions DT Nick Fairley has shed ten pounds since mid-August and is now down to 305.
The Lions have ostensibly asked Fairley to play at a number of different weights over the course of the offseason, and now leading up to Week 1. Regardless of his girth, Fairley's turned in back-to-back dominant preseason games and had a sack in Detroit's exhibition finale. He's all set for Week 1 against the Giants.
Jets claimed WR Walter Powell off waivers from the Cardinals.
Powell is an undersized, athletically-deficient prospect out of Murray State. The Jets would have been better off keeping Quincy Enunwa stashed on the 53.
