Jon Lester held the Cardinals to an unearned run over six innings and struck out seven in the Cubs' 8-5 win Thursday.

A HBP, a throwing error on a steal and a wild pitch gave the Cardinals a run in the first, but that was all they'd manage against Lester. Two good and two bad starts have left Lester 2-0 with a 3.10 ERA so far. The Cubs have won all four of his outings, scoring at least eight runs each time.

Carl Edwards Jr. struck out three of the five hitters he faced in eighth inning for his third hold Thursday against the Cardinals.

94 strikeouts in 66 1/3 innings last year was pretty impressive from Edwards, but he's on an even better pace right now, having fanned 18 in nine innings. He's allowed just one run to date.

Luke Weaver was roughed up for six runs in four innings by the Cubs on Thursday.

Weaver had allowed a total of four runs in 17 1/3 innings on the season. He's been pretty terrific since joining the Cardinals rotation at the end of July, but two of his three ugly outings have come against the Cubs; he gave up eight runs in three innings last Sept. 25. It was singles that did him in today; he gave up a triple to Javier Baez to get the first inning going, but three singles produced the two runs in the frame and then he allowed five more singles in a four-run second.
Apr 19 - 5:48 PM

Greg Holland pitched a hitless inning against the Cubs on Thursday.

Holland needs to put a few of these together before he should be much of a threat for saves, but it seemed like improvement. He struck out one and walked one today. Over his first four outings, he had one strikeouts and seven walks in 2 1/3 innings.
Apr 19 - 5:44 PM

Jason Heyward went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer against the Cardinals in Thursday's win.

Heyward's .226/.311/.358 line isn't very impressive, but he has scored 11 times and driven in 10 runs through 16 games. He'd still need to take a real step forward to be of use in mixed leagues.
Apr 19 - 5:42 PM

Anthony Rizzo went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a walk Thursday against the Cardinals.

Rizzo, who came off the disabled list on Tuesday, doubled his hit total for the season; he had been 3-for-31 in seven games.
Apr 19 - 5:39 PM

Xander Bogaerts (ankle) went through agility drills on Thursday.

He's worked out all three days the Red Sox have been in Anaheim. Beat writer Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe expects him back either by the end of the team's current nine-game road trip or at the start of their next homestand, which begins on April 27. Brock Holt and Tzu-Wei Lin will continue to fill in at shortstop for Boston.
Apr 19 - 5:39 PM

Tommy Pham, who didn't start after injuring his groin Wednesday, flied out as a pinch-hitter Thursday against the Cubs.

Pham is expected to back in center field on Friday. Harrison Bader went 1-for-4 in his place today.
