Gio Gonzalez delivered a strong performance in Friday's victory over the Giants, racking up six strikeouts over his seven frames.

Gonzalez surrendered just one run on five hits on the night and didn't walk a batter. The only damage that he allowed on the night was a solo homer off the bat of Buster Posey in the seventh inning. Now 6-4 on the season, the southpaw will carry a 4.16 ERA and 78/33 K/BB ratio into Wednesday's start against the Reds.

Buster Posey swatted his 14th home run of the season on Friday, but that was the Giants' only offense in a losing effort against the Nationals.

The solo shot off Nationals starter Gio Gonzalez briefly gave the Giants a 1-0 lead in the seventh inning, until the Nats struck back for a pair in the bottom half of the inning. Posey is having another terrific season at the dish, slashing .304/.375/.504 with 14 homers and 57 RBI.

Jake Peavy pitched well in his return from the disabled list on Friday, allowing just two runs on three hits over 6 1/3 innings against the Nationals.

Unfortunately, the Giants provided little run support and the veteran right-hander was saddled with a loss for his effort. Peavy walked four and struck out four in the contest. The only blemish on his night was a two-run homer off the bat of Clint Robinson in the seventh inning, which proved to be the difference in the ballgame. He'll face a much easier assignment next time out when he takes on the Phillies on Friday.
Jul 3 - 8:50 PM

Miguel Cabrera was removed from Friday's game against the Blue Jays in the fourth inning due to an apparent hamstring injury.

Cabrera was running to second base on a 3-2 pitch to Victor Martinez when he pulled up lame. He had to be assisted off the field by the training staff and was walking with a noticeable limp. The Tigers should have an update on his status soon, but any sort of extended absence would be a deadly blow to the Tigers chances of a postseason berth.
Jul 3 - 8:12 PM

Scott Baker was forced to leave Friday's start at Triple-A Oklahoma City with an undisclosed injury.

Baker lasted just 2 2/3 innings before departing. It's unclear at the moment exactly what the injury that he sustained is, but the Dodgers should have an update on the veteran right-hander's status soon.
Jul 3 - 8:07 PM

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said Friday that Andre Ethier will remain the team's starting left fielder after Carl Crawford returns from the disabled list.

The news doesn't come as a huge surprise, as Ethier is slashing .270/.350/.479 with 10 homers and 28 RBI and has been a consistent performer throughout the season. Crawford appears destined for a reserve role upon his eventual return.
Jul 3 - 7:40 PM

Travis d'Arnaud (elbow) is not expected to rejoin the Mets when he's first eligible.

While the hyperextended elbow that he's dealing with isn't going to require surgery, it will keep the young backstop sidelined for longer than 15 days. There remains no clear timetable for his potential return to the Mets lineup.
Jul 3 - 7:33 PM

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that the Mets are willing to overpay to acquire Ben Zobrist from the Athletics.

With the A's winning 12 of their last 18 games, there is hope within the organization that they could still make a run for the postseason, so at least for now Zobrist has been pulled off the trade block. That being said, you never want to give away leverage in a negotiating situation and now that the word is out A's general manager Billy Beane is likely to demand a king's ransom from the Mets in exchange for Zobrist.
