Yoan Moncada homered, tripled, doubled and scored three times Monday against he Mariners.

He strikes out an awful lot, but there aren't many batters who make harder contact than Moncada. While he's not going to hit for average, there's a good chance he'll do enough elsewhere to finish the year as a top-10 second baseman.

Mitch Haniger collected his eighth homer and fifth double Monday against the White Sox.

Haniger is already halfway to last year's homer total (16 in 369 at-bats). The Mariners could eventually consider installing him as a No. 2 hitter and dropping either Dee Gordon or Jean Segura in the lineup. It's not that either speedster has done anything wrong, but Haniger deserves to be hitting higher than sixth right now.

Mike Zunino went 2-for-4 and hit his first homer Monday against the White Sox.

Zunino owners who didn't activate him today have reason to rejoice. He had been 0-for-9 with six strikeouts since coming off the disabled list on Friday.

Twins optioned RHP Alan Busenitz to Triple-A Rochester.

Busenitz gets the boot after allowing two runs over two-thirds of an inning in a relief appearance Monday. The Twins will announce a corresponding move Tuesday.

Tyler Skaggs shut out the Astros for seven innings on Monday in the Angels' 2-0 win.

Skaggs struck out just three tonight, but he went without allowing a homer for the fourth time in five starts and moved to 3-1 with a 2.96 ERA. The homers should begin to come, so he's still not a great bet in mixed leagues.

Although the first two men reached against him, Keynan Middleton pitched a scoreless ninth Monday against the Astros for his sixth save.

Middleton got two strikeouts after the single and walk, and the game ended when Yuli Gurriel was thrown out trying to advance to third on a potential wild pitch. Middleton has now pitched three straight days, so he's definitely due at least one day off. However, given how Blake Parker and Cam Bedrosian have been used, it's hard to say who might replace him in the ninth.

Indians signed OF Melky Cabrera to a minor league contract.

The news was first reported by Hector Gomez of Z101 Digital and confirmed by MLB.com's Jon Morosi. Cabrera, 33, batted .285/.324/.423 with 17 home runs and 85 RBI last season for the White Sox and Royals. He will need some time in the minors to knock the rust off but should be added to the Indians' roster sometime next month and see at-bats in right field.

Gerrit Cole took his first loss after giving up two runs over seven innings Monday against the Angels.

Cole retired the first 13 batters he faced before the Angels pushed across single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Unfortunately, there was no run support for him in this one. Even though he's gone seven innings in all five of his starts and never allowed more than two runs, he has just two wins.
