Adam Eaton (hamstring) could return Friday.
Eaton is again out of the White Sox lineup on Thursday with a mild strain of his left hamstring, but he tried to talk manager Robin Ventura into starting him -- which is obviously a good sign. The dynamic 25-year-old outfielder is batting .282/.373/.394 with one home run and one stolen base in 18 games this season.
Justin Ruggiano was diagnosed Thursday morning with a Grade 2 strain of his left hamstring.
That carries a best-case recovery timetable of 3-4 weeks. Ruggiano suffered the severe hamstring strain Wednesday while attempting to track down a fly ball along the treacherous right-field line at Wrigley Field. He was placed on the disabled list on Thursday.
Russell Martin is out of the Pirates' starting lineup for a second straight game Thursday.
Travis Sawchik of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review says Martin walked off the field "gingerly" after a slide into home plate on Monday, so he could be dealing with some sort of leg injury. Martin might want to go ahead and drop his one-game suspension appeal.
Conor Gillaspie is out of the White Sox lineup again on Thursday due to lignering left hand soreness.
Gillaspie, who hasn't played since Monday, had his left hand in a protective wrap before Thursday's series-finale at Comerica Park. Gordon Beckham will start at second base in his first game back from the disabled list and Marcus Semien will slide over to the hot corner.
Cubs recalled RHP Neil Ramirez from Triple-A Iowa.
Ramirez was sporting a 7.71 ERA in seven innings this season at the Triple-A level, but the Cubs believe in his stuff and will use him in middle relief to help their overworked bullpen. The righty is making his MLB debut.
Cubs recalled LHP Zach Rosscup from Triple-A Iowa.
Rosscup tossed 1 2/3 perfect innings in a doubleheader earlier this season for the Cubs. The left-hander will serve as middle relief depth in the Chicago 'pen.
Cubs optioned RHP Blake Parker to Triple-A Iowa.
Parker surrendered five hits and three earned runs in 1 2/3 innings of relief during his 11-day stay with the Cubs. He should get another shot later this year.
Cubs placed OF Justin Ruggiano on the 15-day disabled list with a left hamstring injury.
Ruggiano injured himself Wednesday while attempting a sliding catch near the right-field bullpen area at Wrigley Field. He had to be helped into the dugout and could be out for much longer than 15 days.
