Astros activated INF Jed Lowrie from the 60-day disabled list.

Lowrie was the Astros' regular shortstop prior to suffering a torn ligament in his right thumb in late April, but he now figures to get the majority of the playing time at third base. Sure enough, he's starting at the hot corner Thursday while Luis Valbuena plays first base. Lowrie was batting .300/.432/.567 with four homers and 10 RBI in 18 games prior to the injury.

Jack Leathersich underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery on Thursday.

Leathersich injured his elbow while pitching with Triple-A Las Vegas. The 24-year-old showed some promise during his first taste of the majors this year, but he'll now likely be sidelined until well into the second half in 2016.
Jul 30 - 4:11 PM

Brewers prospect outfielder Monte Harrison underwent surgery Thursday to repair a fractured fibula.

Harrison suffered the injury last week. The 19-year-old faces a six-month rehab process, but the expectation is that he'll be ready to go for the start of 2016. A toolsy outfielder, Harrison batted .205/.310/.332 with five home runs and 20 steals over 74 games this season between rookie ball and Class A Wisconsin.

Braves acquired INF Hector Olivera from the Dodgers in the three-team, 13-player Alex Wood trade.

Los Angeles remains on the hook for Olivera's full $30 million signing bonus, so the Braves get the Cuban infielder for five years and around $22 million. That's a pretty significant discount on a player the Braves were known to be coveting while he was still on the international free agent market. Olvera, 30, has hit .348/.392/.493 in his first 19 minor league games. He should debut for the Braves by September.
Jul 30 - 4:04 PM

Kris Bryant is not in Thursday's lineup against the Brewers.

He's just getting a day off. Chris Coghlan will fill in at third base and bat third.
Jul 30 - 4:01 PM

Braves acquired LHP Paco Rodriguez from the Dodgers in the three-team, 13-player Hector Olivera trade.

Rodriguez has been limited to 10 1/3 innings of relief this season due to left elbow issues, but he resumed throwing on Wednesday and could make his Braves debut at some point in September. The 24-year-old has flashed the stuff of a top left-handed specialist.
Jul 30 - 3:56 PM

Red Sox optioned LHP Tommy Layne to Triple-A Pawtucket.

The move opens a spot for new reliever Jean Machi, who is officially joining the Red Sox on Thursday night. Layne has a 3.51 ERA in 33 1/3 innings of relief this season. He'll probably get another shot soon.
Jul 30 - 3:52 PM

Braves acquired RHP Zachary Bird from the Dodgers in the three-team, 13-player Hector Olivera trade.

Atlanta is also getting infielder Hector Olivera, lefty reliever Paco Rodriguez, and the Marlins' 2016 competitive-balance draft pick. Bird, a ninth-round pick of the Dodgers in 2012, has a 4.75 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, and 95/48 K/BB ratio in 89 innings this season at High-A. The 21-year-old is far from a top prospect.
