Cubs manager Joe Maddon hasn't decided if Kris Bryant (ankle) will play on Sunday.

Bryant sprained his ankle Thursday and wasn't in the starting lineup on Friday, though he was on deck to pinch-hit. "I'll debate whether to play him or not," said Maddon. "If we don't start him for sure, he'll be able to come off the bench." Javier Baez filled in at third base Friday and would likely do so the same Sunday if Bryant sits.

Kyle Hendricks will have his start skipped on Sunday.

Hendricks was scheduled to start Sunday against Atlanta but manager Joe Maddon tweaked the rotation after Saturday's rainout. Now John Lackey will start Sunday with Hendricks getting the nod Thursday against Washington. "Kyle's fine, he doesn't need any extra time," said Maddon. "The weather permitted us to do these things, so we're going to do it." Hendricks is 1-2 this year with a 3.52 ERA.

Devin Mesoraco is dealing with a stiff left shoulder.

That would explain why he's sitting Saturday against Pittsburgh. Mesoraco will be available off the bench tonight and should be back in the starting lineup Sunday or Monday. Hot-hitting Tucker Barnhart will fill in behind the plate.

Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said Russell Martin (neck) isn't ready to play in back-to-back games yet.

He's been battling neck stiffness for the past week. "He's not 100% that's for sure," said Gibbons. "He's gutting it out, really is what he's doing. But you can tell he's favouring it." Josh Thole is getting the start Saturday but Martin should be back behind the plate Sunday with Marcus Stroman on the mound.

Carson Smith (elbow) is expected to be activated for Tuesday's series opener against the White Sox.

He hasn't allowed a run in his two rehab appearances for Double-A Portland. Smith missed about a month with a strained flexor tendon. He should eventually settle in as a setup man for closer Craig Kimbrel.

Diamondbacks purchased the contract of LHP Zac Curtis from High-A Visalia.

The D'Backs are scouring all levels of their organization in a search for a dependable left-handed reliever, and the 23-year-old Curtis is the next man up. He posted a 5.23 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 22/5 K/BB ratio over 10 1/3 innings at High-A.
Apr 30 - 3:51 PM

Diamondbacks designated LHP Keith Hessler for assignment.

The 27-year-old hurler just joined the big league club on Monday, but allowed three runs on five hits over his three innings of work. It's unlikely that he'll generate much interest on waivers and should continue to function as organizational bullpen depth.
Apr 30 - 3:48 PM

Jimmy Rollins is not in the White Sox starting lineup on Saturday.

It's nothing more than a day of rest for the 37-year-old shortstop. Tyler Saladino will once again fill in for him and bat second against Kevin Gausman and the Orioles on Saturday.
