Matt Holliday (quad) was unable to do any running and agility work on Monday because he's dealing with a virus.

The Cardinals told Holliday to stay at the team hotel in Chicago rather than come to the ballpark. Holliday is aiming to return for the weekend series in Pittsburgh, but it's possible the illness might push him back until after the All-Star break. The Cards should have more on his status Tuesday.

Mariners released INF/OF Willie Bloomquist.

Bloomquist cleared waivers after being designated for assignment and the M's have officially cut him loose. It's possible the 37-year-old will call it quits after 14 major league seasons.
Jul 6 - 8:35 PM

Tim Lincecum (forearm) played catch on Monday.

It's the first time he's thrown since landing on the disabled list last week with a right forearm contusion. There's no timetable for Lincecum's return, and he seems likely to be moved to the bullpen once activated.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Monday that he thinks Hunter Pence (wrist) could return before the All-Star break.

Pence took batting practice on Sunday and the club was very happy with how it went. He'll be examined by a doctor on Monday before the next step is determined. Pence has missed nearly a month of action with tendinitis in his left wrist but has evidently made rapid progress in recent days.

Denard Span left Monday's game against the Reds with an undisclosed injury.

Span has dealt with back issues recently and it's possible they cropped up again. It could also be the Nationals being proactive with the wet conditions in D.C. The Nats should have an update on Span shortly.

Cory Luebke will be examined in San Diego on Tuesday after feeling discomfort in his left elbow in his last rehab start.

Well, that's not good. Luebke, of course, is making his way back from a second Tommy John surgery. The left-hander has allowed three runs over seven innings across in first seven rehab appearances.
Jul 6 - 8:08 PM

Ricky Nolasco will undergo surgery on his right ankle on Monday.

Nolasco first hurt his ankle back in late May and attempts to rehab it proved unsuccessful. There's no timetable for his return, but you'd have to think there's a good chance his season is over. If that's the case, Nolasco will have posted a 5.40 ERA over just 34 starts in his first two seasons with the Twins after signing a four-year, $49 million contract.
Jul 6 - 8:02 PM

Albert Pujols will start at first base for the American League in next week's All-Star Game in place of the injured Miguel Cabrera (calf).

And deservedly so in what has been a big bounce-back season for the future Hall of Famer. The rest of AL reserves will be Brock Holt, Jose Iglesias, Jason Kipnis, Manny Machado, Mark Teixeira, Russell Martin, Stephen Vogt, Jose Bautista, Adam Jones, J.D. Martinez and Prince Fielder. Xander Bogaerts, Yoenis Cespedes, Brian Dozier, Brett Gardner and Mike Moustakas are the Final Vote candidates.
