CC Sabathia gave up five runs in five innings Thursday in a no-decision versus the Rangers.

Any chance of Sabathia losing his rotation spot probably vanished with Michael Pineda's injury. Still, things aren't getting any better for him. He's allowed five runs in back-to-back outings, pushing his ERA back up to 5.54.

Ryan Rua went 2-for-3 with an inside-the-park homer Thursday against the Yankees.

Rua has hit in five straight starts while seeing time against lefties of late. Ideally, he'd almost never start against righties, but with Josh Hamilton, Shin-Soo Choo and Mitch Moreland all being counted on, there should always be room him for somewhere versus southpaws.

Chris Bassitt gave up three earned runs across seven frames in Thursday's 3-1 loss to the Indians.

Bassitt surrendered six hits and one walk while punching out six. It wasn't an altogether bad outing, but life isn't fair: Bassitt has received five runs of support combined in five starts for Oakland. That helps explain why he's 0-4 despite a 3.10 ERA.

Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports that the Giants have agreed to a deal with the Reds for Mike Leake.

The Reds will receive a pair of prospects in return, one of them being Keury Meila. The Giants get the rotation help that they so desperately coveted without having to sacrifice their future. It's also a huge win for Mike Leake, who gets to pitch in his home state while moving from one of the top offensive parks in the league to a pitcher's paradise in San Francisco.

Mark Teixeira went 3-for-4 with a pair of homers and a steal versus the Rangers on Thursday.

Teixeira is even hitting for average lately, coming in at .313 in 83 at-bats during July. What's odd about it is that he's striking out more than he did while his average was so low early on. But his BABIP was definitely due for the correction.
Jul 31 - 12:33 AM

Moved back into the leadoff spot, Matt Carpenter went 4-for-5 with two homers, a double and four runs scored in the Cardinals' 9-8 win over the Rockies on Thursday.

The Cardinals scored three in the bottom of the ninth to win it, with a Greg Garcia bases-loaded walk ending the game. Carpenter turned in far and away his best game since April. He hadn't had even three hits since May 22. The Cards will probably keep him in the leadoff spot for now, but that might not be bad news for Kolten Wong; Wong hit third with Matt Holliday out tonight.
Jul 31 - 12:30 AM

Carlos Martinez allowed five runs and 10 hits in five innings Thursday against the Rockies.

A surprising off day for Martinez, particularly given that this one was at home in St. Louis. It's the first time since way back on May 9 that he's allowed more than three runs and the first time in 27 career starts that he's allowed 10 hits. Hopefully it was just a blip.
Jul 31 - 12:26 AM

John Axford took his fifth blown save after giving up two runs and three walks in the ninth Thursday against the Cardinals.

The Rockies would probably be ready to make LaTroy Hawkins their closer right now if they didn't just trade him. As is, maybe they'll give Axford a little more rope. Rafael Betancourt has a 4.88 ERA that's worse than Axford's mark, so he isn't really making a case for the job. Tommy Kahnle is the sleeper here, even though he has a 1.48 WHIP to go along with his 2.96 ERA.
