Hector Rondon notched his 18th save of the season Sunday in the Cubs' 5-4 defeat of the Brewers.

Rondon served up a two-out homer to Kirk Nieuwenhuis but retired the other three batters he faced in the bottom of the ninth inning at Miller Park -- two via strikeout. The right-hander holds a 1.95 ERA, 0.73 WHIP, and 48/5 K/BB ratio in 37 innings this season for the Cubs, but his days as a closer could be numbered with Theo Epstein and Co. searching the trade block for another elite late-inning arm.

Nationals optioned RHP Lucas Giolito to Triple-A Syracuse.

Giolito allowed four runs -- two earned -- over 3 1/3 innings Sunday in the Nationals' loss to the Padres. It was his third career start at the major league level. Joe Ross (shoulder) could be activated to fill the rotation vacancy later this week. Or maybe the Nats will try Reynaldo Lopez again.

Nationals optioned OF Michael Taylor to Triple-A Syracuse.

Taylor has batted just .222/.274/.372 in 66 games this season at the major league level, including an 0-for-4 from Sunday. He should be back up in September, or maybe sooner if the Nationals get desperate. This move leaves them with only one true backup outfielder.

Junior Guerra yielded just one unearned run over 6 1/3 innings Sunday in a no-decision against the Cubs.

That run came on a Ben Zobrist single in the top of the sixth inning, after Anthony Rizzo had reached base on a fielding error by Brewers second baseman Scooter Gennett. Chicago's offense then went off for five runs against the Milwaukee bullpen in the top of the seventh, ultimately winning the game 6-5. Guerra will carry a shiny 2.85 ERA into his next start at home against the Pirates.

Jon Lester surrendered four earned runs over four innings Sunday in a no-decision against the Brewers.

Lester struggled from the jump in this one, yielding two runs in the bottom of the first inning on two walks, three singles, and three stolen bases. Chicago's offense rallied to grab a 6-5 victory, with Joe Nathan earning his first major league win since September 2014. Lester will try to bounce back next time out against the Mariners.

Nolan Reimold launched a pinch-hit, walk-off two-run homer to end Sunday's 5-3 win over the Indians.

Pinch-hitting for Julio Bourbon, Reimold sent the fans home happy when he connected for a walk-off blast against Tribe reliever Cody Allen with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Those heroics are fine and dandy, but for the season, the veteran outfielder has collected just five homers and 13 RBI over 142 at-bats. He does not hold any fantasy value of note.
Jul 24 - 6:29 PM

Jameson Taillon allowed four earned runs over six innings Sunday in a no-decision against the Phillies.

At least he didn't get hit in the head by a comebacker, which is what happened in his last start Tuesday versus the Brewers. Taillon struck out seven batters on Sunday and issued no walks, but the Phillies got to the rookie right-hander for eight hits, including two home runs. Pittsburgh did rally to take the game 5-4, with the "win" going to Neftali Feliz.
Jul 24 - 6:24 PM

Vince Velasquez surrendered four runs in six innings Sunday as the Phillies fell to the Pirates.

Velasquez escaped with a no-decision because the Pirates didn't take the lead for good until the bottom of the seventh inning, when rookie Adam Frazier hit a go-ahead pinch-hit solo homer off Phillies reliever Edubray Ramos. Velasquez yielded seven hits and walked four in the ugly afternoon outing at PNC Park. He'll try to bounce back next time out against the Braves.
