Yadier Molina has been diagnosed with a torn ligament in his right thumb and will undergo surgery.

Molina is among the most irreplaceable players in baseball, and now the second-place Cardinals are likely going to be without him for the remainder of the 2014 regular season. Tony Cruz is starting at catcher in St. Louis on Thursday night against the Pirates, but the Cards might need to go shopping for an upgrade. Molina suffered the torn ligament Wednesday on an awkward slide into third base.

Yankees placed DH Carlos Beltran on the 7-day concussion disabled list.

Beltran suffered multiple facial fractures (and a concussion) when he was struck in the face by a tipped batting practice ball on Wednesday night. He reported feeling better a few hours after the injury and will aim to return to the Yankees right after the All-Star break.

Pirates recalled OF Jaff Decker from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Decker went hitless in three plate appearances with the Bucs earlier this year. He won't play much.
Jul 10 - 3:45 PM

Pirates optioned RHP Brandon Cumpton to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Cumpton allowed four runs on nine hits over just 3 1/3 innings Wednesday in a spot start against the Cardinals. Francisco Liriano (oblique) is returning on Sunday.
Jul 10 - 3:44 PM

Royals recalled RHP Louis Coleman from Triple-A Omaha.

Coleman had a 6.41 ERA in 18 appearances with Kansas City earlier this season. He'll pitch in mid-relief.
Jul 10 - 3:41 PM

Royals placed LHP Jason Vargas on the 15-day disabled list with appendicitis.

Vargas underwent an appendectomy on Thursday and could be out 3-4 weeks. Bruce Chen seems likely to take his rotation spot. Vargas, 31, owns a 3.31 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, and 82/29 K/BB ratio in 125 innings this season.

According to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal, Brandon Phillips (thumb) will be out for "a while."

Phillips rolled over his left thumb Wednesday while trying to make a diving play on the edge of the outfield grass. The Reds initially labeled it a thumb sprain, but Rosenthal is hearing from sources that it's more of a "ligament issue" and "possible tear." Ramon Santiago started at second base for Cincinnati on Thursday afternoon against the Cubs.

Homer Bailey was removed from his start Thursday against the Cubs due to pain in his right patellar tendon.

That's better than an arm injury but still a serious concern for the Reds and their $105 million starter. Bailey allowed three earned runs in five innings before pulling up lame in the middle of a pitch in the top of the sixth. Cincinnati's medical staff should provide an update on the right-hander's knee at some point Thursday evening. Bailey finishes the first half with a 4.21 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, and 105/38 K/BB ratio in 117 2/3 innings.
