Andre Ellington managed 19 yards on nine carries and eight yards on three receptions in the Cardinals' third preseason game.
Ellington led backfield work with the first-team offense in this one, even executing on an early short-yardage run. He was spelled with the ones by rookie David Johnson, as Chris Johnson (hamstring) was inactive. The Cardinals seem determined to scale back Ellington's workload after he wore down on 20-plus touches per game last season. The Johnsons will play complementary roles behind Ellington. Ellington remains the lead back, but Arizona could end up running a two- or even three-way committee once the season gets rolling. On the ground, Ellington has managed 34 yards on 14 carries (2.43 YPC) this preseason.
The Bears are expected to start Alan Ball opposite Kyle Fuller at cornerback this season.
Ball is a 30-year-old journeyman the Bears signed to a one-year, $3 million deal in the offseason. Tim Jennings' release locks in Ball opposite Fuller, with special teamer Sherrick McManis currently the favorite to man the slot. With problems at safety as well, the Bears' secondary will be one to target for fantasy matchup purposes this year. They face Aaron Rodgers in Week 1.
Latavius Murray managed one yard on seven carries in the Raiders' third preseason game.
Stuffed relentlessly by Arizona's perennially stout defensive front, Murray managed -9 yards on his opening five carries. He busted a 13-yard gain on his sixth run, then took a seat with Trent Richardson taking over in Oakland's backfield. Through three preseason games, Murray has 56 yards and a TD on 17 carries (3.29 YPC). Murray has not caught a pass in August games.
Citing multiple sources, Profootballtalk.com reports "no schism exists" between the Redskins' front office and owner Dan Snyder regarding the future of Robert Griffin III in Washington.
A previous ESPN report strongly hinted Redskins management and coaches want to move on from RG3, but are "meeting resistance from team ownership." PFT's Mike Florio contends that "this simply isn't true," and "everyone is on the same page." Florio insists Snyder is not hindering the Redskins' football operations. Based on Snyder's track record, that is arguably difficult to buy. Either way, Griffin's future in Washington is clear as mud.
Bears placed WR Kevin White on the reserve/PUP list.
He's officially ineligible to play in the Bears' opening six games. The Bears will turn to Eddie Royal as their No. 2 receiver opposite Alshon Jeffery, with Martellus Bennett continuing to play a prominent passing-game role. White is recovering from stress fracture surgery and may miss his entire rookie year.
Bears released RB Daniel Thomas.
Very clearly on his last NFL legs, Thomas failed to beat out Ka'Deem Carey and Sinorise Perry behind Jeremy Langford, Quizz Rodgers, and Matt Forte.
Chargers waived TE David Paulson, QB Chase Rettig, LB Brock Hekking, TE Logan Stokes, OT Forrestal Hickman, CB Manny Asprilla, DL Cam Botticelli, WR Titus Davis, RB Jahwan Edwards, LB Curtis Grant, and DL Luther Robinson.
This is the Chargers' first round of cuts.
Texans RB Chris Polk rushed 11 times for 22 yards in Sunday night's third preseason game.
Polk was the Texans' No. 3 back in this one, playing behind Alfred Blue and Jonathan Grimes, but still seeing some work with the Brian Hoyer offense. Through three preseason games, Polk has 87 yards on 28 carries (3.11 YPC), adding six catches for 55 yards. The Texans may run something of an RBBC until Arian Foster returns, mixing in Polk for a handful of touches per game.
