Rangers acquired LHP Cole Hamels, LHP Jake Diekman and cash from the Phillies for C Jorge Alfaro, RHP Jake Thompson, OF Nick Williams, RHP Alec Asher, LHP Matt Harrison and RHP Jerad Eickhoff.

The Rangers have themselves a co-ace with Yu Darvish to put in front of their 2016 rotation, and since the Phillies ate $9.5 million of the $82 million he's still owed and took back Harrison's $33 million, he won't break the budget. Of course, they had to give up three top prospects to get him, but since they managed to hold on to their two best in Joey Gallo and Nomar Mazara, it's hard to blame them for making the deal. They'd still seem to be long shots to reach the postseason this year, but this can't hurt their chances. Hamels loses some fantasy value with the deal, since he's going to the tougher league and a hitter's park, but at least he's looking at getting run support for the first time in years.

Brewers acquired OF Malik Collymore from the Cardinals in exchange for RHP Jonathan Broxton and cash considerations.

Collymore entered the season ranked 27th by Baseball America among the Cards' prospects, but he's hit only .216/.326/.378 in rookie ball while making a move from second base to the outfield. He does have some athleticism, so there's some lottery ticket potential here.

David Price is expected to make his Blue Jays debut on Monday versus the Twins.

The Jays were considering having him start Sunday, but they've decided to keep R.A. Dickey on turn. Price was acquired from the Tigers on Thursday in exchange for Daniel Norris, Jairo Labourt and Matt Boyd.

Left-hander Jake Diekman was traded from the Phillies to the Rangers in an eight-player deal.

Diekman has had a rough year, with his always shaky control going from bad to worse. Still, he has one of the best arms of any left-handed reliever in the game, which explains how he's struck out 225 batters in 173 1/3 innings as a major leaguer. The Rangers will ask for less and potentially get more out of him than the Phillies did. Plus, he's under control through 2018.

Blue Jays placed 2B Devon Travis on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 29, with a left shoulder strain.

Travis re-injured his left shoulder on Tuesday. He was given a cortisone shot in hopes that he'd be able to power through the ailment, but apparently it hasn't had the desired effect. It's unclear at this point how long he might be sidelined.

Phillies acquired C Jorge Alfaro, RHP Jake Thompson, OF Nick Williams, RHP Alec Asher, LHP Matt Harrison and RHP Jerad Eickhoff from the Rangers for LHP Cole Hamels, LHP Jake Diekman and cash.

Alfaro won't necessarily be the best player the Phillies are getting here, but he likely was their top priority, what with Carlos Ruiz's career winding down and no other potential starting catcher in the organization. Alfaro is on the shelf now with an ankle injury and might not be back this year, but he offers quite a bit of offensive potential and plenty of tools behind the plate. His skills haven't made him a major league-quality receiver yet, but he still should get there in time. It'd probably be for the best if he's not needed until 2017, giving him a full year in Triple-A next season.

Cardinals acquired RHP Jonathan Broxton and cash considerations from the Brewers in exchange for OF Malik Collymore.

Broxton holds an ugly 5.89 ERA for the season, but he's struck out a batter per inning and been very good of late, allowing runs in just one of his last 10 appearances. He's another bullpen depth addition after they acquired Steve Cishek last week.
Jul 31 - 12:16 PM

Rangers prospect Jake Thompson was traded to the Phillies in an eight-player deal.

Thompson was a pretty good prospect when the Rangers got him from the Tigers in the Joakim Soria deal last summer, but his stock soared when he excelled in Double-A after the deal. This year, he's been in more of a holding pattern, amassing a 4.72 ERA and a 78/30 K/BB ratio in 87 2/3 innings back in Double-A. He's just 21 and he has the arm of a possible No. 2 starter if he stays healthy, but he's no longer moving as quickly as it looked like he might a year ago.
