Dodgers sent RHP Brandon Beachy outright to Triple-A Durham.
Beachy accepted the assignment rather than test the free agent waters. The 28-year-old right-hander is still working back from a second Tommy John surgery. He allowed seven runs in eight innings (two starts) with LA.
Indians SS prospect Yu-Cheng Chang plated a career-high five runs Sunday in a win for Class-A Lake County.
He homered for the second game in a row. Over his last three contests, Chang is 4-for-13 with nine RBI. The 19-year-old has raised his average 16 points during his eight-game hitting streak. 24 of Chang's 75 hits this season have gone for extra bases.
A.J. Burnett has been diagnosed with a strained flexor tendon in his right arm.
The veteran right-hander was sent for an MRI on Monday after complaining of inflammation in his pitching elbow during his last start July 31 against the Reds. There was some concern about ligament damage, but Monday's MRI showed his UCL is intact. Burnett will undergo treatment instead of surgery and is hoping to return to the Pirates later this year. J.A. Happ has taken over the rotation vacancy in Pittsburgh.
Blue Jays claimed RHP Ben Rowen off waivers from the Cubs.
Rowen was designated for assignment by the Cubs on July 31 to open up a roster spot for new starting pitcher Dan Haren. Rowen, a 26-year-old right-handed reliever with promising minor league numbers, has been assigned to the Blue Jays' Triple-A team in Buffalo.
Rockies RHP prospect Jesus Tinoco spun six shutout innings Sunday in his debut for Low-A Asheville.
The win was Tinoco's third in 16 starts. Tinoco didn't allow a runner to reach second base until the sixth inning. He matched his second-highest strikeout total of the year with seven punch-outs.The 20-year-old was acquired from Toronto last week in the Troy Tulowitzki trade. His best pitch is a 60-grade fastball that clocks in the mid-90s.
Rays purchased the contract of 1B/3B Richie Shaffer from Triple-A Durham.
Shaffer has hit .265/.359/595 with 16 home runs in 55 games this season at the Triple-A level. He was the 25th overall pick in the 2012 MLB Amateur Draft and could slide his way into semi-regular playing time if things go well out of the gate. The 24-year-old should be on fantasy watch lists.
Rays optioned LHP Matt Moore to Triple-A Durham.
Moore went 1-3 with an 8.78 ERA in six starts after returning July 2 from Tommy John surgery. The 26-year-old southpaw clearly needs to build more arm strength and the Rays want him to do it as a starter in the minors rather than in the bullpen as a mop-up man. Tampa Bay has some upcoming off days and will roll with a four-man rotation for the time being.
Brandon Beachy will accept an assignment to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Beachy was designated for assignment by the Dodgers on July 30. He had the option of electing free agency, but the 28-year-old right-hander has decided to remain with the organization. Beachy is still building arm strength following his second Tommy John surgery.
