CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Cardinals have acquired John Lackey from the Red Sox.

This presumably means that Joe Kelly -- who has struggled since returning from the disabled list -- will move to the bullpen. Lackey was sporting a cool 3.60 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, and 116/32 K/BB ratio in 137 1/3 innings this season for Boston and gets a nice fantasy boost moving from the American League to the National League and from Fenway Park to Busch Stadium. He holds a bargain $500,000 option for 2015.

The Red Sox are close to trading John Lackey to either the Cardinals or Dodgers, reports ESPN Boston's Gordon Edes.

Both clubs are good fits. The Dodgers want to fortify a rotation that is pretty good 1-5, but would be in serious trouble in the event of an injury. The Cardinals, meanwhile, would like to add more depth to a rotation currently relying heavily on Joe Kelly and Shelby Miller. New acquisition Justin Masterson is still on the disabled list, and Carlos Martinez didn't acquit himself well as a starter and was moved back to the bullpen. Jaime Garcia and Michael Wacha are obviously both shelved as well.

Rockies recalled LHP Pedro Hernandez from Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Hernandez will start for the Rockies on Thursday afternoon against the Cubs. The 25-year-old lefty has an ugly 6.14 ERA this season at Triple-A and is obviously a poor fantasy play, even against light-hitting Chicago.

Rockies optioned RHP Rob Scahill to Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Scahill was in the majors for less than 24 hours. The 27-year-old right-hander has a rough 5.68 ERA in four appearances this season out of the Rockies' bullpen.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that the Dodgers are "trying hard" to land Joaquin Benoit.

Benoit is under contract with the Padres through 2015 and carries a vesting option for 2016, so the San Diego front office isn't fully set on moving him. But the Dodgers need bullpen help and have the farm system to get something done with their division foes.
Jul 31 - 12:16 PM

The Boston Globe's Pete Abraham was told by a source that there is a 70-percent chance John Lackey will be traded.

The Marlins have been tied to Lackey in recent days, and one wonders if the Fish will be more motivated now that another reported target, Tommy Milone, has been traded to the Twins. Owing to Lackey's 2012 Tommy John surgery, the Red Sox have a $500,000 club option for 2015 that is hugely attractive, especially to small market teams. The veteran right-hander has put up a solid a 3.60 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 116/32 K/BB ratio over 137 1/3 innings this season.

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Royals and Braves are the leaders for Chris Denorfia.

Denorfia is fully expected to be traded by the Padres before Thursday's 4 p.m. ET deadline. The 34-year-old hasn't hit very well this season for San Diego, but part of that is the pitcher-friendly ballpark. He is known as a versatile defender in the outfield.

The Red Sox are "getting swarmed" by Andrew Miller offers, reports USA Today's Bob Nightengale.

"Once he's dealt, dominos will fall," an executive told Nightengale. Presumably, that means teams looking for relievers refuse to move onto second options before Boston chooses a Miller package. You can't blame the Red Sox for being choosy: Miller has been one of the game's best left-handed relievers over the last three years, boasting a 2.78 ERA in 140 appearances. He's been even better in 2014, collecting a 2.34 ERA and 69/13 K/BB ratio over 42 1/3 innings. The Braves, Pirates and Royals have all been connected to the lefty reliever, and ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reported Wednesday that Boston wants a top prospect in return. They have four hours left to find one.
