Diamondbacks prospect third baseman Brandon Drury slugged two home runs as part of a 3-for-5 day for High-A Visalia.

Drury hit 41 doubles and 14 home runs in 2013, so his total of eight doubles and five home runs through 20 games is likely inflated by the offense-friendly environment of the California League. Drury acquired by the Diamondbacks when they dealt Justin Upton, so if he turns into a .300 hitter with 15 home run power, it would be a good result. He lacks the talent to be an elite player, but if he comes close to his ceiling he could be a starter for a decade.

Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times suspects Joe Smith will soon take over as the Angels' closer.

And some of the other Angels beat writers agree. Halos skipper Mike Scioscia said Wednesday night that he was sticking with Ernesto Frieri as closer despite the right-hander's 9.35 ERA, but the situation could be reassessed during Thursday's scheduled team off day leading into a big three-game series at Yankee Stadium. Smith is worth grabbing in all standard mixed leagues while Scioscia and Co. mull a change.

Rangers prospect third baseman Joey Gallo launched three home runs on Wednesday, bringing his Carolina League-leading total to nine for the season.

Gallo also went 3-for-4 with three walks, four runs, and six RBI. He is hitting .359/.458/.891 for the season. His walk rate has increased and his strikeout rate has decreased, leading some to wonder if he could be promoted to Double-A Frisco soon. Ryan Rua is manning the hot corner in Frisco, so Gallo could see some time in an outfield corner or at first base.

Andre Ethier went 0-for-4 with a strikeout in his return to the Dodgers' lineup Wednesday.

Ethier sat out Tuesday's game with flu-like symptoms. He's batting just .206/.261/.302 on the young season.

Reds prospect outfielder Jesse Winker went 4-for-4 with two doubles, a home run, and a walk on Wednesday for High-A Bakersfield.

Winker is up to .338/.418/.558 for the season with three home runs, eight doubles, and 11 stolen bases. His walk rate has increased, but his strikeout rate has remained roughly constant, which is a great sign. Winker is unlikely to put up a slugging percentage close to this as he climbs the minor league ladder, but he could have an OBP near .400, which would make him a valuable outfielder without a high slugging percentage.

Reds left-handed prospect Ismael Guillon fanned 11 batters in seven shutout innings on Wednesday for Low-A Dayton.

Guillon is in the Midwest League for the third consecutive season. There were indications that the Reds were going to promote him to Double-A Pensacola to start the season, but he ended up back in Dayton. Guillon should see a promotion soon, though it could be to High-A Bakersfield and not Double-A. He sports a 1.16 ERA and 9.6 K/9 for the season, so it will be interesting to see if he can maintain his level of success in the event of a promotion.
Apr 24 - 8:37 AM

Phillies left-handed pitching prospect Jesse Biddle struck out 10 batters in seven innings on Wednesday for Double-A Reading.

Biddle allowed two hits and walked one batter in his best start of the season. Biddle threw 111 pitches, inducing seven groundouts, six flyouts, zero line drives, and two popups. He sports a 2.86 ERA and a 12.1 K/9 rate, while batters are hitting .213/.265/.352 off him. Biddle is rapidly climbing the Phillies pitching depth chart, and could make his appearance with his hometown Phillies later this season.
Apr 24 - 8:27 AM

Pirates prospect first baseman Stetson Allie hit two home runs on Wednesday, bringing his season line to .291/.400/.655 for Double-A Altoona.

He is hitting .444/.565/1.222 over his past five games with four walks, four strikeouts, two doubles, and four home runs. Allie has taken major steps forward this year, most notable is his significant decrease in his strikeout rate. He also has a career low .287 BABIP, which indicates that his batting average could see an increase. He still strikes out too much, but he may be a viable stash option in the deepest of leagues.
