Pirates manager Clint Hurdle revealed on Friday that Gerrit Cole (lat) will not return from the disabled list when first eligible on July 20.

Cole is already throwing again, but he's dealt with two shoulder injuries over the last month and the Pirates don't want to rush him back. There's no timetable for his return, but early August seems doable as long as the right-hander doesn't have any setbacks.

Orioles signed RHP Robert Coello to a minor league contract.

Coello had been at Triple-A with the Yankees, posting a 1.69 ERA with 44 strikeouts over 32 innings. He could get a shot with the O's at some point during the second half.

Ian Desmond (hand) is not in the Nationals' lineup Friday.

X-rays on Desmond's right hand came back negative, but he's still a little sore. He should return to the lineup sometime over the weekend. Danny Espinosa is at shortstop Friday.

Royals optioned INF Christian Colon to Triple-A Omaha.

Colon picked up four hits over 12 at-bats in his couple weeks with the big club. Nori Aoki has returned from the DL to take Colon's roster spot.

Royals activated OF Norichika Aoki from the 15-day disabled list.

Aoki is hitting leadoff and is in right field on Friday against the Tigers. He batted just .263/.326/.324 over 68 games before going down with a groin injury and might not receive regular playing time once Alex Gordon (wrist) returns.

Jake McGee and wife, Morgan McNally, welcomed their daughter, Rowen Beth, on Thursday. He's expected back on Sunday.

Escobar missed the last couple weeks with right shoulder soreness. He returns to a disappointing .244/.322/.328 batting line with four homers and 22 RBI over 77 games.

Indians sent RHP Mark Lowe outright to Triple-A Columbus.

Lowe had been designated for assignment earlier this week, but he's cleared waivers and decided to remain in the organization. He's allowed seven runs -- three earned -- over seven innings of work with the Indians this season.
