Cubs acquired LHP Clayton Richard from the Pirates in exchange for cash considerations; purchased his contract from Triple-A Iowa.

Richard could have opted out of his deal, but instead the Pirates will get a little money to move him elsewhere. The veteran left-hander will start on Saturday versus the Marlins, as the Cubs have sent down Donn Roach. Richard hasn't pitched in the majors since 2013 but has had a nice year at Triple-A Indianapolis, posting a 2.09 ERA over nine starts. He struck out just 25 over 56 innings.

Jake Odorizzi (oblique) will make one more rehab start before being activated from the disabled list.

Odorizzi pitched well for High-A Charlotte on Wednesday, allowing just one run on two hits and one walk over four innings. He only got his pitch count up to 57, though, so the Rays will have him stretch out a little more. He'll rejoin the big club's rotation next weekend.
Jul 3 - 5:34 PM

Tom Koehler limited the Cubs to just one run across six innings in a 2-1 win Friday.

Koehler yielded just five hits -- four singles -- on the day, striking out four while issuing one free pass and hitting a batter. He was pulled after six even though he'd thrown just 91 pitches, but the move proved to be a wise one as the Marlins' bullpen took care of business. Koehler boasts a 2.88 ERA over eight starts since re-joining the rotation after a brief demotion to the bullpen. He'll get the Reds at home next week to close out his first half.
Jul 3 - 5:31 PM

A.J. Ramos nailed down his 13th save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning in Friday's win over the Cubs.

Ramos surrendered a leadoff single to Chris Coghlan, but a fielder's choice, a groundout and a strikeout got him out of the frame and allowed him to preserve the one-run victory. Since taking over the closer duties, Ramos has permitted just three runs over 21 appearances while converting 13 of 14 save opportunities.
Jul 3 - 5:25 PM

Jason Hammel pitched well but took a hard-luck loss Friday, holding the Marlins to two runs over seven innings.

Hammel struck out five while yielding just five hits and one walk, but unfortunately two of those hits left the yard. The big right-hander falls to 5-4 despite a terrific 2.89 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 104/18 K/BB ratio over 102 2/3 innings. He'll try to get back in the win column next week against the Cardinals.
Jul 3 - 5:22 PM

Justin Bour homered for the fourth straight game Friday, with his solo shot proving to be the winning run in a victory over the Cubs.

Making a bid for National League Player of the Week honors, Bour put a Jason Hammel offering into the basket in right field in the sixth inning. He also singled and drew a walk, reaching base in three of four plate appearances. Michael Morse (back) is due back soon, but he might have a better shot to play in the outfield with the way Bour is going.
Jul 3 - 5:18 PM

Red Sox designated RHP Zeke Spruill for assignment.

The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for Noe Ramirez. Spruill has put up a 5.40 ERA over 53 1/3 innings at Triple-A Pawtucket this season.
Jul 3 - 5:13 PM

Patrick Corbin (elbow) will make his season debut on Saturday against the Rockies.

Corbin had been slated for one more rehab start, but the Diamondbacks felt that he looked ready on his rehab assignment so they will bring him back a little early. Making his way back from Tommy John surgery, the left-hander put up a 4.76 ERA and 11/7 K/BB ratio over 17 rehab innings. Ideally, fantasy owners should give him at least a start or two before sticking him back into their lineup.
