Athletics purchased the contract of INF Andy Parrino from Triple-A Nashville.

Parrino was batting .273/.369/.432 with four homers for Nashville. He'll serve as a utility infielder for the A's.

Athletics placed RHP Edward Mujica on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured right thumb.

Mujica suffered the injury Thursday when he was hit by a comebacker off the bat of the Rays' Bobby Wilson. It's unclear at this point how long he's expected to be sidelined.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that Henderson Alvarez has been pitching through a "90 percent tear" of his right ulnar collateral ligament "for years."

This is the first we've heard about a UCL issue for Alvarez, although he had a brief elbow problem last season and there were whispers when he went on the disabled list last month that he had an elbow injury in addition to a shoulder ailment. There have been some that have pitched through ligament damage in the past, although it's hard to imagine anyone pitching with as much of a tear that Alvarez apparently has. It certainly makes him a medical red flag moving forward.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Braves inquired on Jonathan Lucroy but were told he was not available.

The Brewers are going to be sellers prior to the trade deadline, but one guy they appear intent on keeping is Lucroy, who is under team control cheaply through 2017. Heyman adds that the Braves have been "disappointed" by the play of Christian Bethancourt, who is batting just .190/.215/.286 and hasn't been as good as expected defensively.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Blue Jays inquired on Cole Hamels but were told the lefty would not waive his no-trade clause to go to Toronto.

It's not clear whether talks ever really got going, but it's a moot point with Hamels apparently not willing to play in Canada. The Blue Jays are one of 20 clubs on the left-hander's limited no-trade list. Although Toronto can be crossed off as a potential landing spot for Hamels, the southpaw remains a good bet to be dealt prior to the July 31 deadline.

Blue Jays manager John Gibbons indicated Thursday that Daniel Norris could rejoin the club's rotation before long.

Norris is slated to make his fourth start for Triple-A Buffalo on Friday after posting a 2.50 ERA with 20 strikeouts over 18 innings in his first three outings. "His last outing was pretty good, we just want to see that a couple of times, a few times maybe, for his own benefit. He needs that," Gibbons said. "We’re looking to get him back. He got here so quick, he started to struggle, you want to make sure what you did by sending him down was worthwhile, that he’s regrouped enough, instead of rushing him back. If he’s not quite ready yet, then you’re back to square one again."

Royals released LHP Joe Paterson.

Paterson posted a 5.68 ERA over 12 relief appearances at Triple-A Omaha this season. The 29-year-old has spent time in the majors in each of the last four seasons and shouldn't be out of a job long.

Austin Jackson (ankle) will remain on his rehab assignment at Triple-A Tacoma through at least the weekend.

The Blue Jays have received a lot of flak for the condition of the artificial turf at Rogers Centre, and the Mariners understandably don't want Jackson to make his return on the sketchy playing surface. The M's will play on artificial turf in Tampa early next week, as well, but Jackson is a good bet to be activated then because the Rays' turf is in better shape.
