Rays released RHP Grant Balfour.

Balfour exercised the opt-out deal in his contract that was agreed upon when he re-signed with the Rays at the beginning of this month. The veteran reliever struck out 11 while posting a 2.79 ERA over 9 2/3 innings for Triple-A Durham. He shouldn't have an issue catching on elsewhere quickly, though it remains to be seen whether he'll be able to land a major league contract.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Tuesday that he expects Ivan Nova (elbow) to begin a rehab assignment "pretty soon."

Nova is expected to throw about 70 pitches Wednesday or Thursday in an extended spring training game. His rehab assignment would figure to be pretty lengthy, so Nova is still multiple weeks away from a return. Still, the Yanks will be happy to have him as a rotation option relatively soon.

Yan Gomes is not in the Indians' lineup Wednesday.

As expected, he hasn't been catching back-to-back games as he eased back into things in his return from the disabled list. Roberto Perez is behind the dish in Gomes' place.

Brandon Moss is not in the Indians' lineup Wednesday.

It's a rare day off versus a righty for Moss. David Murphy is starting in right field, while Nick Swisher is handling designated hitter duties.

Carlos Santana (wrist) is back in the Indians' lineup Wednesday.

Santana was hit on the left wrist by a pitch in Tuesday's game, but X-rays came back clean and he evidently felt fine when he arrived at the park Wednesday morning. The first baseman is batting .219/.368/.363 with five homers and 24 RBI this season.

Oswaldo Arcia (hip) will remain on his rehab assignment with Triple-A Rochester through at least the end of the week.

Twins assistant general manager Rob Antony has indicated previously that Arcia will have to hit his way back on the active roster, so it would behoove him for his bat to get hot. Arcia was hitless in his first rehab game Tuesday.

Neil Ramirez is still feeling soreness in his ailing right shoulder.

The update on Ramirez was actually revealed by Justin Grimm, who had been rehabbing with him. "His shoulder is still barking," Grimm said. "They're just going to more slow play it and wait for it to go away. Hopefully we'll get him back soon and take off." Ramirez has been out since mid-April with shoulder inflammation.

Cubs released LHP Phil Coke.

Coke is now free to sign elsewhere after the Cubs designated him for assignment last week. He's reportedly already received interest from multiple clubs.
