Chase Utley was a late scratch from Tuesday's lineup after feeling discomfort in his right side during batting practice.

He'll be re-evaluated on Wednesday before the Phillies determine how much time he might miss. If it's an oblique issue that Utley is dealing with, obviously there's a good chance it could lead to a trip to the disabled list. Freddy Galvis is taking his spot at second base Tuesday.

David Freese (thumb) is not in the lineup Tuesday for the second straight game.

Freese still has some swelling around his right thumb where he needed three stitches for a small cut. He's considered day-to-day. Matt Carpenter is getting the start at third base, while Daniel Descalso is at second.

Red Sox manager John Farrell said he has considered moving Jacoby Ellsbury out of the leadoff spot.

Ellsbury is down to a .241/.303/.335 batting line after hitting just .179/.256/.218 so far in 18 games this month. Farrell wants to show confidence in his leadoff hitter, though, so he'll remain at the top of the order for. Shane Victorino is an option to replace Ellsbury at the top of the order if the center fielder doesn't pick it up.

Shane Victorino (hamstring) is not in the Red Sox' lineup Tuesday.

Victorino is day-to-day after leaving Monday's contest with left hamstring tightness. The Red Sox don't believe he'll require a trip to the disabled list.

Coco Crisp is not in the Athletics' lineup Tuesday.

It's just a day of rest after he played in the first four games after being activated from the DL. Chris Young is in center field Tuesday.

Jake Westbrook (elbow) didn't throw off a mound Tuesday as hoped.

Westbrook threw for about 15 minutes on flat ground instead. The fact that he did throw indicates that it's probably not really a setback as much as the Cardinals just decided to wait a bit longer before having him throw from the bump. Westbrook is expected to miss at least a couple more starts.

Adam Jones is dealing with some right leg soreness.

Jones tweaked his leg during Monday's game. The Orioles are playing him in the designated hitter spot on Tuesday in order to protect him. As long as the ailment doesn't get worse, he should continue to play through it.

Orioles manager Buck Showalter said either T.J. McFarland or Jake Arrieta will start on Thursday in Toronto.

The O's decided to send down Jair Jurrjens in order to activate Miguel Gonzalez, so they'll need a fifth starter until Wei-Yin Chen (oblique) is ready. Arrieta is more stretched out since he's been used as a starter this season, but Showalter thinks McFarland would be able to throw 75-90 pitches. Neither pitcher would be worth streaming against the Blue Jays.
