Kelvin Herrera allowed a hit and a walk, but managed to work a scoreless ninth inning on Friday against the White Sox.

Herrera admitted after his blown save on Wednesday that he's still dealing with an illness, and still didn't look sharp in this one. The Royals' closer owns an uninspiring 4.62 ERA and 1.30 WHIP this season.

Charlie Blackmon (quad/hamstring) went 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored in his return to the Rockies' lineup on Friday.

Blackmon had left Wednesday's game due to minor cramping in his leg, but appears to be good to go. He's having an outstanding season, slashing .327/.382/.610 with 23 homers, 67 RBI and eight swipes.

Carson Kelly delivered a two-run double Friday in the Cardinals' victory over the Cubs.

Making an emergency start following his promotion after Yadier Molina (ankle) was a late scratch, Kelly nearly had his first big league homer and grand slam as part of the Cards' nine-run eighth inning when he doubled off the wall. It was his only hit of the day in five trips to the plate, although he had a deep flyout in his final at-bat. Kelly could potentially get another start Saturday if Molina is still not feeling great and he'll surely wind up playing more than previous backup Eric Fryer did. However, it's hard to see him producing fantasy value unless Yadi suffers an injury that requires a disabled list stint.

Matt Szczur came off the bench to go 4-for-5 with a triple and a double Friday as the Padres beat the Giants 12-9.

His fourth hit was an RBI single that gave the Padres the lead in the 11th. It made him the first player to get four hits off the bench since Paul Janish did so for the Reds on July 4, 2010. No Padre had ever accomplished the feat. Szczur entered the game in the fourth as part of a double-switch and doubled to lead off the following half-inning. He had two chances to become the first player ever to pick up a cycle off the bench, but he couldn't come up with the homer.

Jose Pirela finished 4-for-6 with triple, a double and three RBI on Friday.

He also walked in the 11-inning victory. Pirela is batting .296 with 15 doubles and five homers in just 152 at-bats. Plate discipline is an issue, and he's miscast as a leadoff man for the Padres. Still, he's been the team's best hitter since his callup.

Carlos Asuaje went 4-for-7 with three RBI against the Giants in Friday's 11-inning game.

Asuaje was a disappointment in Triple-A this year, posting a .741 OPS while playing in an extremely friendly hitting environment at El Paso. He's done quite a bit better in the majors thus far, coming in at .830 in 84 at-bats. If it keeps up, he should continue to start at second after Yangervis Solarte returns, with Solarte returning to his old position. Unfortunately, his lack of power and stolen base ability still leaves him with little fantasy upside.

Hunter Pence went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI before being removed from Friday's game against the Padres.

Pence was replaced in a double-switch, but he still had his best game of the month. In fact, his double tonight was his first since June 22.
Jul 22 - 3:06 AM

Brandon Maurer took his first blown save in two months after giving up three runs in the ninth Friday against the Giants.

Maurer could have closed this one out without a run scoring, but Jerry Meals wouldn't give him a borderline pitch against Brandon Crawford with two strikes and two outs. Crawford singled in a run, bringing pinch-hitter Conor Gillaspie to the plate as the tying run. Meals again failed to call a strike on a close pitch to begin the at-bat, and Gillaspie hit the 1-0 offering out to right. Maurer hadn't given up a run since June 25 and he's 20-for-23 saving games this year, so his job is safe.
