Hanley Ramirez went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's loss to the Astros.

Ramirez's solo homer in the second inning opened the scoring for the game. He drove in his second run of the contest on a fielder's choice in the fifth inning of a wild contest that saw the teams combine for 28 hits and 20 runs. The outfielder was hit in the left hand on June 24, but after missing a week, he's played in each of the last three games and is now working on an eight-game hitting streak as he looks to add to his 17 homers, 41 RBI and .280/.328/.500 triple-slash.

Brian McCann belted a walkoff three-run home run in the 11th inning on Friday, propelling the Yankees to a 7-5 come-from-behind victory against the Rays.

The Yankees were on the ropes a couple of times in the ballgame but never stopped fighting. They trailed 3-0 heading into the eighth inning where Mark Teixeira connected on a three-run homer to tie the game and force extra innings, then trailed 5-3 in the 11th before McCann's heroic blast against Steve Geltz. It was the veteran backstop's lone hit in five at-bats on the night and he also drew a walk. He has been one of the best offensive catchers in the league this season, slashing a healthy .264/.333/.477 with 13 long balls and 52 RBI.
Jul 3 - 11:55 PM

Masahiro Tanaka logged a quality start in a no-decision against the Rays on Friday, surrendering three runs on six hits over his six frames.

The right-hander punched out five on the evening while walking one. The Rays scratched out a pair of runs against him in the first inning, then tacked on the final run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly. Tanaka has struggled to find consistency since returning from the disabled list, and simply doesn't look like the dominant force that he was during the 2014 season. He'll carry a 3.94 ERA and 61/12 K/BB ratio into Thursday's matchup against the Athletics.
Jul 3 - 11:52 PM

Justin Masterson unraveled in the fourth inning of Friday's loss to the Astros, allowing all five runs on his line before exiting with two outs in the frame.

Masterson was cruising through the first three innings, but the cruise hit a whirlpool in the fourth when Masterson allowed seven hits and five runs in the frame. There was no huge hit, just a parade of singles and doubles. With the debacle, Masterson saw his ERA jump from an already poor 5.58 to an even more questionable 6.14. He's also pitching to a 1.68 WHIP. Given that he just reentered the rotation on June 28, it's likely he'll get at least one more start, but the numbers are discouraging. Said start would come in a high-profile environment, as the Red Sox will be facing the Yankees at Fenway when Masterson's next slated to take the ball.
Jul 3 - 11:51 PM

Grady Sizemore continued his hot-hitting in Friday's loss to the Yankees, going 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored.

He is experiencing a nice little resurgence to begin his career with the Rays, hitting .409 (9-for-22) with a homer, four RBI and a stolen base in six games. It's extremely unlikely that he continues to be this productive, but he's worth utilizing as a fourth or fifth outfielder in deeper mixed leagues until he cools off.
Jul 3 - 11:51 PM

Dan Straily failed to impress in earning a no-decision against the Red Sox on Friday, lasting just 4 2/3 innings and surrendering five runs (four earned).

Up 5-2 entering the fifth inning, Straily proceeded to allow three runs before being lifted with two outs. He's filling in for Scott Feldman (knee). With a 4.06 ERA and 1.38 WHIP for Triple-A Fresno over 77 2/3 innings prior to his call-up, it's hard to trust him for fantasy purposes. He'll take to the road against the Indians in his next scheduled start.
Jul 3 - 11:50 PM

Carlos Gomez launched a grand slam and finished with five RBI to help down the Reds by a 12-1 score on Friday.

Gomez stepped up with the bases loaded and the Brewers up 5-0 in the seventh inning. He promptly unloaded on a Carlos Contreras offering for a grand slam to vanquish any vague hopes of a Reds comeback. In addition to the big slam, Gomez also chipped in with an RBI single to finish 3-for-5 with five total RBI. Overall, he's hitting .271/.314/.427 with six homers, 31 RBI and 36 runs scored. Plus seven steals, though he's also been caught four times.
Jul 3 - 11:47 PM

Chris Archer delivered another dominant start on Friday, racking up eight strikeouts over 6 2/3 scoreless innings against the Yankees.

Archer surrendered just three hits and three walks in the contest. Unfortunately for him, and for fantasy owners, the Rays bullpen was unable to protect the three-run advantage he handed them. The 26-year-old has been one of the finest pitchers in all of baseball this season, registering a 2.18 ERA and 141/28 K/BB ratio over 115 2/3 innings. He'll look to finish the first half strong when he does battle against the Royals in Kansas City on Thursday.
