A.J. Griffin (shoulder) has yet to resume a throwing program.

Griffin has reported improvement with his shoulder, but he remains shut down. The right-hander hasn't appeared in a game since mid-June and looks like a long shot to make it back to the majors this season.
Aug 4 - 7:27 PM

Justin Upton (thumb) is absent from the Padres' lineup Tuesday.

Upton exited Monday's game with a bruised right thumb. The ailment doesn't seem to be serious, but he could require a few days of rest. Will Venable is in left field Tuesday, with Melvin Upton handling center.
Aug 4 - 6:57 PM

Drew Smyly (shoulder) will make at least two more rehab starts.

He'll make his third on Thursday after being roughed up for nine runs across 5 2/3 innings in his first two outings. Smyly's shoulder apparently feels fine, which is the most important thing, but the Rays would certainly like to see better results before bringing him back. He's been out since early May with a partial labrum tear.
Aug 4 - 6:45 PM

Lonnie Chisenhall (neck) is back in the Indians' lineup Tuesday.

Chisenhall had to exit Monday's contest after suffering whiplash on a diving attempt. He's making his fifth straight start in right field.
Aug 4 - 6:41 PM

Orioles recalled LHP T.J. McFarland from Triple-A Norfolk.

He'll serve as a long reliever for the O's. McFarland holds a 2.70 ERA and 2.03 WHIP over 12 relief appearances this season.
Aug 4 - 6:35 PM

Orioles optioned RHP Tyler Wilson to Triple-A Norfolk.

Wilson was terrific in a spot start Monday, holding the A's to two runs over 7 2/3 innings. Chris Tillman (ankle) is due back later this week, though, so the O's no longer had a need for Wilson. He'll be back in September, if not sooner.
Aug 4 - 6:34 PM

Brian Johnson has been diagnosed with an ulnar nerve issue in his left elbow.

The good news is that there doesn't appear to be anything wrong with the ligament, and the Red Sox think he'll be fine with rest and rehab. They're going to proceed cautiously with him, however, so there would seem to be a good chance he won't make another appearance at Triple-A Pawtucket this season.
Aug 4 - 6:33 PM

Braves activated LHP Josh Outman from the 60-day disabled list; released him.

Outman has missed all of this season due to thoracic outlet syndrome. He began a rehab assignment last month, but evidently the Braves weren't bullish on his chances of contributing this season. The southpaw will now be free to seek employment elsewhere.
