Marcus Semien is not in the Athletics' lineup Wednesday.
Semien has just three hits over his last 27 at-bats and has really struggled defensively, so the A's are giving him a breather. Eric Sogard is handling shortstop in his place.
Astros pitching prospect Vincent Velasquez posted eight strikeouts Tuesday in a win for Double-A Corpus Christi.
Velasquez limited Northwest Arkansas to three hits and one walk over five scoreless frames. The 22-year-old has made the most of his first stint in Double-A, recording a brilliant 1.40 ERA over his first 19 1/3 innings. Opponents have hit just .200 during that span. Corpus Christi has been pretty conservative with the right-hander's workload. He hasn't pitched more than 5 1/3 innings in any of his four starts.
Mets pitching prospect Steven Matz scattered three hits over seven shutout innings Tuesday in a win for Triple-A Las Vegas.
Matz, who also clubbed two hits in the victory, now leads all minor league pitchers with 68 strikeouts. Tuesday was one of his most efficient outings as Matz needed just 77 pitches to dispose of Colorado Springs. The 23-year-old owns the second-lowest ERA (1.99) in the Pacific Coast League and the third-lowest WHIP (1.04). He's working hard to improve his changeup. The 6'2" left-hander already offers a plus fastball and a decent breaking pitch.
Dodgers shortstop prospect Corey Seager delivered four hits Tuesday in a win for Triple-A Oklahoma City.
The 21-year-old mega-talent homered twice Monday and is now batting .500 with four RBI over his last three contests. The former first-round pick has made a smooth transition to Triple-A, hitting .280 in 93 at-bats since his call-up. Seager is MLB.com's sixth-ranked prospect. It's no wonder the Dodgers let Hanley Ramirez walk in free agency with Seager waiting in the wings.
Pedro Alvarez is not in the Pirates' lineup Wednesday.
He's sitting versus a lefty (Brad Hand) as he often has this season. Sean Rodriguez is at first base in Alvarez's place.
Rusney Castillo is not in Wednesday's lineup due to a sore right shoulder.
Castillo banged up the shoulder while making a diving catch during Tuesday's game and couldn't get it loose Wednesday. The Red Sox think the ailment to be minor for now, so consider Casillo day-to-day. Brock Holt is in right field Wednesday.
Rangers recalled RHP Jon Edwards from Triple-A Round Rock.
Edwards had one scoreless appearance with the big club earlier this season but has spent almost all of the year at Round Rock, where he's held a 1.15 ERA and 20/5 K/BB ratio over 15 2/3 frames. He'll work in middle relief initially.
Rangers optioned OF Jake Smolinski to Triple-A Round Rock.
Smolinski had just been recalled less than a week ago, but the Rangers don't have much of a role for him with Josh Hamilton back. He's hit just .151/.299/.226 over 67 plate appearances in the majors this season.
