Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Sunday that he's expecting Garrett Richards (knee) to rejoin the rotation 2-3 weeks into the season.

The club had previously not dismissed the possibility of Richards being ready by Opening Day, but they've now conceded that he'll begin the season on the disabled list. His recovery from patella tendon surgery is going well, though, as he's throwing bullpen sessions and will do simulated pitchers' fielding practice on Sunday. Richards is coming off a breakout 2014 campaign that included a 2.61 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 164/51 K/BB ratio over 168 2/3 innings.

Rockies placed RHP Tyler Chatwood on the 60-day disabled list with a right elbow injury.

The move frees up a 40-man roster spot for John Axford. Chatwood will miss the majority of the 2015 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Rockies purchased the contract of RHP John Axford from Triple-A Albuquerque.

Axford was fully expected to make the Opening Day roster after signing a minor league deal last month, and now it's official. The veteran reliever posted a 3.95 ERA and 63/36 K/BB ratio in 54 2/3 innings last season between the Indians and Pirates. He could be an option for saves should LaTroy Hawkins slip up.

Dodgers signed RHP Mike Adams to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Adams, 36, had a terrible time staying healthy during his tenure with the Phillies, making just 50 appearances over two seasons. He pitched well when healthy, though, posting a 3.50 ERA with 44 strikeouts across 43 2/3 innings. The veteran reliever should have a good shot to make the Opening Day roster as long as he's healthy.

Marcos Grunfeld of Lavinotinto.com reports that Mariners pitching prospect Victor Sanchez remains in a coma.

"The situation remains the same," Mariners coordinator of Venezuelan operations Emilio Carrasquel said. "Nothing has changed." It's been two weeks since Sanchez was hit in the head during a boating accident in his native Venezuela and the 20-year-old remains in critical condition. He suffered a double skull fracture and brain hematoma during the incident.

Zach Putnam has been nursing some back tightness.

The reliever has had his back wrapped the last couple days, but it's a minor issue. Putnam will help set up for closer David Robertson in 2015 after holding a 1.98 ERA across 49 relief appearances last season.

Jose Fernandez (elbow) will throw off a mound on Sunday for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery.

He's slated to throw 15 fastballs during the session. Fernandez will be built up slowly from there, eventually mixing breaking balls into his mound work. The Marlins will obviously proceed extra cautiously with their young ace, as Fernandez isn't expected back until mid-June at the earliest. He had Tommy John surgery last May.

Padres manager Bud Black on Friday listed Wil Myers as an option to hit leadoff.

"(Yangervis) Solarte, (Wil) Venable, (Cameron) Maybin and Myers – let’s start there," Black said. Myers is the only one of the names Black listed who's guaranteed a spot in the lineup, so it's a reasonable guess that he's the top candidate to bat leadoff. While not a prototypical leadoff hitter, Myers did sport a nice .354 on-base percentage during his American League Rookie of the Year-winning 2013 campaign. Solarte could hit leadoff should he win the third base job, but Will Middlebrooks is the favorite to start there.
