Jonathan Pettibone (shoulder) said he's probably a few weeks away from throwing to live hitters in batting practice.

Pettibone is recovering from shoulder surgery in June, and as such he remains a few weeks behind his peers. Pettibone, 24, threw just nine innings this past season, but he had a 4.04 ERA in 18 starts for the Phillies in 2013. Given how weak the back end of the Phillies rotation appears, the right-hander could find his way into the rotation once healthy.

Matt Wieters (elbow) is set to start at catcher for Sunday's intrasquad game.

It will be the first time Wieters has been behind the dish since last May. While he'll serve as the backstop, Wieters still won't be allowed to throw at 100 percent until March 17. He's slated to catch two innings in Sunday's game. Everything is trending toward the 28-year-old being ready for Opening Day.

Josh Hamilton's potential suspension for drug use would begin at the start of the season, a source tells Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com.

That's meaningful because Hamilton is also in the process of recovering from shoulder surgery, so the recovery and his suspension could coincide. In fact, there's a chance that Hamilton could actually end up serving his entire suspension, whatever it may be, while rehabbing. Any decision on a potential suspension isn't expected anytime soon, according to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register.

Luis Cruz was forced to take Saturday off from throwing due to swelling in his pitching hand.

Cruz sustained the injury on Friday when he jammed his hand trying to field a ground ball during pitcher's fielding practice. He's hopeful that he'll be able to play catch on Sunday and resume mound work shortly after.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Saturday that the team is working Alex Yarbrough out at third base, first base and left field this spring to "see if the versatility is there".

With increased versatility, the Angels could be considering him for a spot on the bench. Yarbrough, a fourth-round selection from the 2012 draft, is a second baseman by trade. He spent the entire 2014 season at Double-A Arkansas where he slashed .285/.321/.397 with five homers, 77 RBI and six stolen bases in 136 games.

Jason Kipnis (finger) could miss the first 2-3 Cactus League games as he continues to recover from December's surgery to repair tendon damage in his left ring finger.

The 27-year-old is progressing nicely in his recovery and should soon be hitting without any restrictions. He's looking to rebound from a tremendously disappointing 2014 campaign in which he slashed .240/.310/.330 with six homers and 41 RBI in 129 contests.

Colby Lewis will start the Rangers' Cactus League opener against the Royals on Wednesday.

The 35-year-old hurler is looking to rebound from a troublesome 2014 campaign where he compiled a 5.18 ERA and 1.52 WHIP over 170 1/3 innings while losing a league-worst 14 ballgames. Yovani Gallardo, Lisalverto Bonilla and Chi Chi Gonzalez are also scheduled to pitch for the Rangers on Wednesday.
Feb 28 - 3:14 PM

Rangers signed RHP Jesus Pirela to a minor league contract.

The 25-year-old hurler spent the 2014 season in the Mexican League where he posted a 1.51 ERA, 0.78 WHIP and 61/18 K/BB ratio over 53 2/3 innings. He could be a surprise candidate to earn a spot in the Rangers bullpen.
