Dolphins second-round CB Xavien Howard (knee) is expected to ramp up his workload in practice this week.

Howard sat out the third preseason game, but he should be healthy enough to participate in the final game next week. If he shows well, he still has a chance to beat out disappointing sophomore Tony Lippett, but he needs to prove he has a firm enough grasp of the defense. Coach Adam Gase does not seem to be concerned. "I wouldn't say he's far behind mentally because he's dialed in to what we're doing," Gase said. "We're going to try to lean on his strength of just matching him up with somebody and letting him go."

Colin Kaepernick sat during the national anthem before Friday night's preseason game.

This is a non-story, but it is something the 49ers could use against Kap if they decide to move on. "The national anthem is and always will be a special part of the pre-game ceremony," the team said in a statement to Pro Football Talk. "It is an opportunity to honor our country and reflect on the great liberties we are afforded as its citizens. In respecting such American principles as freedom of religion and freedom of expression, we recognize the right of an individual to choose to participate, or not, in our celebration of the national anthem." The real story is Kaepernick was dreadful on the field Friday night, almost guaranteeing he will open the season as a backup.

Bucs second-round K Roberto Aguayo converted on field goals of 48 yards, 21 yards, and 27 yards Friday night against the Browns.

He was also a perfect 3-for-3 on extra point attempts. Aguayo has had a rough go since the Bucs laughably traded up for him in the second round, so he needed this strong performance to get back on track. It is not Aguayo's fault the Bucs spent so much to get him, but he will likely have to cope with unrealistic expectations for at least the next several seasons.

The Washington Post's Mike Jones believes DE Ziggy Hood may have won a roster spot Friday night.

Hood started the third preseason game with Chris Baker sidelined with a leg injury, and he produced two tackles for loss and a sack. Signed as essentially roster filler in February, Jones said Hood has been "one of the biggest surprises" of camp. The former first-round pick should open the season with a big role in the rotation.

Le'Veon Bell said he felt "great" following his first live action since tearing two ligaments in his right knee last November.

"I can only imagine how I'll feel in a month," he added. Bell rushed three times for 21 yards and caught all five of his targets for 37 yards in the third preseason game Friday night. He looks back to full strength, and he will return to elite-RB1 status once he is eligible to play Week 4.

Saints coach Sean Payton called out the offensive line after the third preseason game Friday night.

"The one thing that’s concerning and troubling right now is ... our ability to protect," Payton said. "So we’ve got to keep looking at the best lineup, the best way for us to give us a chance offensively." The Saints have struggled both to protect Drew Brees and create holes in the running game all preseason. Guard remains the primary concern, with sophomore Andrus Peat struggling on the right side and neither Tim Lelito nor Senio Kelemete distinguishing themselves on the left. With the defense still terrible, the Saints need the offense hitting on all cylinders to find any success this season.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Bills rookie RB Jonathan Williams is "fine" after suffering a rib injury in the third preseason game Friday night.

Williams had to leave the game after being body slammed at the end of a play, but the injury should not cost him much time. Even with LeSean McCoy sitting out, Williams worked behind Reggie Bush on Friday. He will open the season as at best the No. 3 back, and he is likely still behind Mike Gillislee as well.

Anthony Davis started at right guard in the 49ers' third preseason game Friday night.

Davis was not able to jump Trent Brown at right tackle, but he is too talented and the line is too shaky to keep him on the bench. Davis should have some growing pains at guard, a position he has not played since his freshman year in college, but he will still be an upgrade on Andrew Tiller.
