Yankees designated first baseman Chris Carter for assignment.

So much for the 2016 NL home run champ. Carter hit just .204 with eight homers and 23 RBI in 167 at-bats, but the Yankees probably would have stuck with him longer if not for his poor defense at first base. Now they'll go to Tyler Austin, a player with a similar profile but one who has been red-hot in the minors.

Alex Wood pitched six innings and allowed one run and three hits Friday in a victory over the Rockies.

It was a surprise to see Wood hit for himself in the bottom of the sixth, but he didn't come back out for the seventh after 98 pitches. That's actually a season-high pitch count for him this year, as the Dodgers have tried to be very careful with him after he opened the season in the pen. He's 8-0 with a 1.86 ERA.

Kyle Freeland gave up five runs and 10 hits in six innings Friday in a loss to the Dodgers.

Freeland's last two road starts haven't gone particularly well, as he's given up five runs on each. At Coors Field, he's managed to turn in five straight quality starts and given up a total of two runs in the last two. He has another road start coming up, but since it's against the Giants, he seems to be a safe play.

Yasiel Puig homered and walked after replacing an injured Corey Seager in Friday's game against the Rockies.

It was a surprise to see Puig being held out of the lineup against a lefty tonight, even though he's been far more effective against righties this year. Once he got his chance, he showed why he should have been in there all along. The homer off starter Kyle Freeland was his first versus a lefty in 2017 and 14th overall. He's quietly on pace for a 30-homer season.

Ian Desmond went 0-for-4 and struck out three times Friday against the Dodgers.

Desmond had a nice series against the Giants last week, but he's 2-for-20 with no RBI, eight strikeouts and no walks in his last five games. There's no way mixed leaguers can write him off while he has Coors Field on his side, but he's been quite a disappointment thus far.
Jun 24 - 1:13 AM

Luis Perdomo blanked the Tigers for six innings Friday to win for the second time this season.

Perdomo walked a season-high five, but he gave up just two hits, both of them singles. He's turned in three straight quality starts to lower his ERA from 5.30 to 4.56. There's no mixed-league value here, but he's been solid overall and definitely better than the 2-4 record in 13 starts suggests (he's amassed eight quality starts).
Jun 24 - 1:07 AM

Brandon Maurer pitched a perfect ninth in a 1-0 game for his 14th save Friday against the Tigers.

Maurer is still sporting that ugly 6.14 ERA, but he is 9-for-9 in save chances over the last month.

Whit Merrifield delivered a walk-off two-run double in the Blue Jays’ 5-4 victory over the Blue Jays on Friday.

The Royals were down 4-1 to begin the frame, but they scratched and clawed their way back against Ryan Tepera and Aaron Loup before Merrifield doubled to left off Jason Grilli to send the fans home happy. Merrifield finished 2-for-5 on the night and is batting .291/.332/.456 through 55 games on the year. Amazingly, the Royals are now back to .500 at 36-36.
