Whit Merrifield is out of the Royals' starting lineup Thursday afternoon against the Tigers.

Ramon Torres will start at second base and bat leadoff versus Detroit right-hander Michael Fulmer. It looks to be a routine day of rest for Merrifield, who's slashing .279/.320/.437 with six home runs and eight stolen bases in 59 games this season for Kansas City.

Colby Rasmus (hip) is not ready to come off the 10-day disabled list.

Rasmus has been out for exactly 10 days (as of Thursday) and he had been aiming to return when first eligible, but his surgically-repaired hip is still giving him trouble. There's no timetable at this point for him to even begin a minor league rehab assignment. It's going to be a while.

Josh Norris of Baseball America reports the Yankees are promoting prospect Dustin Fowler from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

And he figures to see a good amount of playing time right out of the gate with recent callup Tyler Austin battling a hamstring injury. The 22-year-old Fowler was sporting an .857 OPS with 12 home runs, 42 RBI, 13 stolen bases, and 48 runs scored through 69 games this season at the Triple-A level. He carries some deep-league fantasy appeal, though it might not be a very long stay.

Rangers activated RHP Andrew Cashner from the 10-day disabled list.

Cashner will return to the Rangers' rotation Thursday afternoon against the Indians after missing a little under two weeks with a left oblique strain. The 30-year-old right-hander has registered a so-so 3.50 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, and 33/31 K/BB ratio in 69 1/3 innings (12 starts) this season for Texas.

Rangers optioned RHP Preston Claiborne to Triple-A Round Rock.

Claiborne allowed three earned runs over two innings of relief in his one appearance with Texas. He's getting the boot to clear a 25-man roster spot for Andrew Cashner.
Jun 29 - 9:18 AM

Carlos Gomez (back) is in the Rangers' starting lineup on Thursday afternoon against the Indians.

He will start in center field and bat sixth versus Cleveland right-hander Corey Kluber after missing a couple of games with a sore back. Gomez has a cool .826 OPS with 10 home runs, six stolen bases, and 30 runs scored in 49 games this season for Texas.
Jun 29 - 9:15 AM

Jim Adduci (oblique) started in left field and went 1-for-3 in his second rehab game Wednesday with Triple-A Toledo.

Tigers manager Brad Ausmus has said that Adduci will get 30-40 at-bats in the minors before returning to the active major league roster. He's also going to see some action in center field while he's on the farm. The 32-year-old has been on the disabled list since May 11 because of a strained right oblique muscle.

Chris Tillman (family) might not make his scheduled start Friday against the Rays.

Tillman's wife Christina is due with the couple's first child, so the Orioles right-hander flew back to Baltimore from Toronto on Wednesday evening. If the baby arrives on Friday, the expectation is that Dylan Bundy will start the series opener versus the Rays at Camden Yards. Bundy is on extra rest anyway as the O's attempt to manage his workload.
