J.D. Martinez will be shut down for 3-4 weeks after being diagnosed with a sprained Lisfranc ligament in his right foot.

Martinez doesn't need surgery, but he'll be in a cast for 7-10 days and won't be ready for baseball activities again until well into April. It will obviously be quite a while after that before he's ready to play in a major league game. Steven Moya is likely to handle right field while Martinez is on the shelf.

Masahiro Tanaka has been named the Yankees' Opening Day starter.

It's no surprise, of course. He'll be followed by CC Sabathia and Michael Pineda, with the other two spots in the rotation to be determined. Tanaka put up a 3.07 ERA across 31 starts for the Yankees last season.

Chris Stewart exited Friday's game against the Rays with a sore left groin.

The Pirates are calling him day-to-day, so it doesn't sound like anything that might keep him from being available for Opening Day. Stewart will be the Bucs' backup catcher this season.

Giants released RHP David Hernandez.

Hernandez requested and was granted his released after being told he wasn't going to make the Opening Day roster. The veteran reliever posted a 4.76 ERA over six relief appearances this spring. He has struck out over a batter per inning during his career and shouldn't be out of a job long.

Archie Bradley will begin the season as a long reliever.

Bradley has pitched well of late this spring but wasn't going to make the rotation. However, he'll at least get to be part of the big league club even if it's basically in a mop-up role. Zack Greinke, Patrick Corbin, Taijuan Walker, Robbie Ray and Shelby Miller will form the Diamondbacks' rotation.

Michael Saunders was removed from Friday's game as a precaution after being hit in the right hand by a pitch.

Saunders simply has a bruise and will be fine. He's batting .213 with one homer this spring.

The Marlins didn't list Adam Conley among their top four projected starters on Friday.

They listed, in order, Edinson Volquez, Dan Straily, Tom Koehler and Wei-Yin Chen and left the fifth spot open. Conley has had a bad spring with a 9.35 ERA over 8 2/3 innings, but he's probably the club's most talented starter and was very good last season before suffering a finger injury. Jose Urena is out of options and is another candidate for the rotation, but he has a 7.20 ERA this spring. Justin Nicolino is also in the mix and holds a 5.56 Grapefruit League ERA. We fully expect Conley to ultimately grab the No. 5 spot.

The Marlins have named Edinson Volquez their Opening Day starter.

He'll be followed by Dan Straily, Tom Koehler and Wei-Yin Chen. Adam Conley will surely be the fifth starter, but the Marlins surprisingly didn't list him among the starting five yet. It will be the fifth Opening Day start of Volquez's career.
