Red Sox optioned LHP Brian Johnson to Triple-A Pawtucket.

May 27 - 7:22 PM

Scooter Gennett went 2-for-4 and drove in a run with a double during Saturday's loss to the Phillies.

He drove in Eugenio Suarez with a double in the sixth inning that tied the game at 3-3. It was a score that held until the Phillies walked off in the bottom of the ninth. Gennett has made the most of his limited playing time in his first season as a Red, batting .315/.344/.522 with three homers and 18 RBI in 92 at-bats.

Christian Arroyo is not in the Giants' lineup Saturday against the Braves.

May 27 - 7:17 PM

Bronson Arroyo allowed three solo home runs in five innings of work against the Phillies on Saturday.

All told he gave up three runs on five hits and one walk while striking out four in the ballgame. He has given up 18 home runs in 10 starts and is on pace to break the all-time record of 50 homers allowed in a season (Bert Blyleven in 1986). Arroyo allowed 46 homers in 2011. The last seven runs he has allowed have all come on solo home runs. The 40-year-old has a 6.62 ERA in 51 2/3 innings. The Reds will keep running him out there because they need him to eat innings so badly due to multiple injuries in their starting rotation.

Buster Posey is not in the Giants' lineup Saturday against the Braves.

May 27 - 7:17 PM

Robert Whalen struggled in his Mariners debut, scattering seven hits, five runs and two walks over 5 1/3 ineffective innings in Saturday’s loss to the Red Sox.

All things considered, Whalen was probably fortunate to allow just five runs. The Mariners had relievers warming in the bullpen during Whalen’s 33-pitch first inning, which included three hits, three runs, two walks and two hit batsmen. Whalen settled down after that but was never sharp. He didn’t miss many bats and was bailed out by a number of base-running mistakes by the Red Sox. Jackie Bradley Jr. finally ended his day by smacking a two-run homer into the right field bullpen. Even with Seattle’s rotation running on fumes, it’s hard to imagine Whalen getting another start after Saturday’s meltdown.
May 27 - 6:59 PM

Making his Fenway Park debut, Brian Johnson yielded just five hits over nine scoreless frames for his first career shutout Saturday in the Red Sox’s 6-0 win over the Mariners.

Wow. This was only Johnson’s second career start but he looked like a seasoned vet with his masterful command of the strike zone. The 26-year-old left-hander struck out eight and didn’t walk anyone. Johnson’s fastball only sat in the mid to high 80s but he attacked the Mariners by throwing 85 of his 109 pitches for strikes and also benefited from a number of stellar defensive plays from Jackie Bradley Jr. and Mookie Betts. Johnson probably isn’t long for the rotation with David Price due back next week but this was an afternoon he’ll never forget. Johnson’s gem was the first complete game thrown by a Red Sox pitcher this year.
