Dustin Pedroia went 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored on Thursday against the Pirates.

He also drew a walk, reaching base in all four of his trips to the plate. Pedroia had knee surgery last October but certainly looks healthy this spring, hitting an even .500 across his 26 at-bats.

Starling Marte cranked a grand slam off of the Red Sox' Heath Hembree on Thursday.

It was Marte's only hit in four trips to the dish, although he also plated an additional run with an RBI groundout. Marte's Grapefruit League action was interrupted by the World Baseball Classic and a minor ankle injury, but he's 6-for-15 with a home run and a couple steals so far.

Rays pitching prospect Austin Pruitt whiffed five over four shutout frames Thursday against the Yankees.

Another impressive showing from Pruitt, who now boasts a 1.84 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 16/2 K/BB ratio over 14 2/3 frames this spring. Pruitt is 27 and isn't really viewed as much of a prospect, but he pitched well last season between Double- and Triple-A and could make his big league debut in 2017.

Yankees pitching prospect Jordan Montgomery yielded two runs but struck out eight over 4 1/3 innings versus the Rays on Thursday.

One of the runs charged to the lefty scored after he was pulled. It was another impressive showing from Montgomery, who got Evan Longoria swinging twice among his eight punchouts. It was the first start this spring for Montgomery after his first four appearances came in relief, and he's thrust himself into the rotation competition with a 3.68 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 13/2 K/BB ratio across 14 2/3 frames.

Ronald Torreyes singled and swatted a solo home run on Thursday against the Rays.

Torreyes took former closer Shawn Tolleson deep in the seven inning. He got off to a slow start this spring but now has eight hits over his last 23 at-bats. Torreyes played third base Thursday but is competing to be the fill-in at shortstop while Didi Gregorius (shoulder) is out.

Giants released INF Gordon Beckham.

Beckham reportedly asked for his release. He was always a long shot to make the team with so many mouths to feed in San Francisco's crowded infield. Beckham was due a $100,000 retention bonus on March 28, which was also a contributing factor in the team's decision to move on. The 30-year-old hit just .194 over 36 Cactus League at-bats.

Ender Inciarte is back in the Braves' lineup Thursday against the Tigers.

He's batting leadoff and playing center field. Inciarte is back after spending the last two weeks representing Venezuela at the World Baseball Classic. He impressed at the WBC, hitting . 292 with three RBI over seven games. The 26-year-old is entering his second year with Atlanta after arriving from Arizona in the Shelby Miller trade last offseason.

Blake Treinen struck out a pair in a scoreless inning to record a save in Thursday's win over the Mets.

Ty Kelly reached on a one-out single, but Treinen got Michael Conforto to ground out and Juan Lagares to go down swinging to close things out. That Treinen pitched the ninth is notable, as Nationals manager Dusty Baker is the rare skipper who likes to pitch his closers in the final inning during spring training. Still, Treinen might be third in the pecking order behind Shawn Kelley and Koda Glover for saves even though he's struck out six over three scoreless frames this spring.
