Nationals manager Matt Williams indicated that Jayson Werth (shoulder) would probably start the season on the DL.

Werth is scheduled for three minor league at-bats on Wednesday as he works his way back from off-season shoulder surgery. While he might start the season on the DL, all signs point to a speedy return for the outfielder.

The third opinion on Anthony Rendon's left knee injury has confirmed an MCL sprain.

Rendon injured his left knee on March 9. It was initially thought to be relatively minor, but the strain kept him out of action in the weeks that followed. He sought a third opinion from Dr. Steven Singleton on Tuesday. Rendon will begin the season on the DL and once the strain starts to feel better, he'll ramp up his baseball activities. There is no current timetable for his return.

Didi Gregorius (wrist) was not in Wednesday's lineup.

Brendan Ryan will start in Gregorius' place. Gregorius injured his wrist trying to make a diving play on Saturday. Initially, the Yankees hoped he would be able to play by mid-week. His absence doesn't necessarily mean that he'll miss Opening Day and the injury is still being classified as relatively minor.

Astros place RHP Brad Peacock on the 15-day disabled list with a hip injury.

This move was expected. Peacock's been working his way back from offseason hip surgery. He made his spring debut on Sunday, allowing four runs (three earned) in two-thirds of an inning. He'll rehab in the minors for the first month of the season.

Astros placed LHP Brett Oberholtzer on the 15-day disabled list with lat soreness.

Oberholtzer's lat soreness has set him back significantly. He entered March as a contender for a rotation spot, but ends it on the disabled list. He is scheduled to pitch in Wednesday's Grapefruit League game and has been throwing bullpen sessions. When healthy, he's slated to be the Astros fourth starter. He'll be replaced in the rotation by Asher Wojciechowski.

According to ESPN.com's Jim Bowden, the Mets have signed OF Juan Lagares to a four-year contract extension.

The deal's not quite final yet, though it sounds close. Bowden writes that it's expected to be worth more than $20 million and will include a club option. Already a legitimate defender, Lagares has slashed his way to a .345/.400/.655 line this spring. Don't expect him to hit like that for an extended amount of time. At age 26 and coming off a .281/.321/.382 line over 452 plate appearances in 2014, it's possible that he'll carry over at least some of his spring power, though, making him an an interesting name to keep in mind late in mixed drafts.

Josh Fields (groin) indicated that he's close to returning from injury.

"I feel like things have been coming along pretty good," Fields said. Fields is likely to begin the season on the disabled list and has not thrown off the mound in the last week. He suffered the right groin strain in a Grapefruit League game on March 23. Despite the pitcher's confidence, there's still no timetable for his return.

Twins optioned LHP Caleb Thielbar to Triple-A Rochester.

Thielbar was knocked around for 19 hits and eight runs (seven earned) in 11 spring innings. He's better than those numbers, though, putting up a 2.59 ERA with a 74/30 K/BB in 94 innings over the last two seasons. If the team needs an extra lefty in the bullpen at some point, they could do a lot worse. As of now, Brian Duensing is the only left-hander in their bullpen outside of closer Glen Perkins.
