According to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, the Blue Jays have discussed Melvin Upton and Andrew Cashner with the Padres.

Rosenthal notes that it's unclear if the Jays would have interest in just Upton if they can't get Cashner. The Padres seem to be pitting potential suitors against one another in an effort to drive up the price on their available pieces. Where there's this much smoke, there's usually fire, so don't be surprised to see some sort of deal get done in the next couple of days.

Nationals signed RHP Justin De Fratus to a minor league contract.

The right-hander was acquired by the Rangers in mid-June, but designated for assignment shortly after. The 28-year-old owns a 2.89 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 25/16 K/BB ratio across 37 1/3 innings at Triple-A this season.

Buster Olney of ESPN reports that the Indians have had conversations with the Padres in recent weeks about Melvin Upton.

Olney notes that while the two clubs have talked, nothing is close regarding a potential deal. The interest around Upton has picked up considerably in the last couple of days and it looks like there's a strong likelihood that he could get moved before next week's trade deadline. The Orioles are reported to be in negotiations for him as well.

Coco Crisp singled in Ryon Healy in the bottom of the 13th for the only run as the A's beat the Rays 1-0 on Friday.

It was Crisp's only hit of the night, but it came at a good time. He should be starting to lose playing time with the A's needing to go younger down the stretch, but Bob Melvin just can't give him up. He's batting .196/.268/.235 in 51 at-bats this month. He's led off 12 times for the A's in July and scored just twice.
Jul 23 - 1:49 AM

Steven Souza went 0-for-5 and struck out twice in a loss to the A's on Friday.

Souza is hitting .193 with a 19/2 K/BB ratio in 57 at-bats since coming off the disabled list on July 2. He also hit .233 with a 36/7 K/BB ratio and just five extra-base hits in his last 24 games before going on the disabled list. A demotion to Triple-A needs to be considered at some point. One thing is for sure: the Rays would like to have Wil Myers back right about now.
Jul 23 - 1:44 AM

Matt Adams hit a homer in the bottom of the 16th to give the Cardinals a 4-3 win over the Dodgers on Friday.

The Cardinals' three, four and five hitters had been 0-for-19 on the night before Adams yanked a Bud Norris pitch out to right to end the game. The Cardinals as a whole were outhit 14 to eight in this one. It was the 11th homer for Adams this season. He's likely to resume losing some playing time next week after Brandon Moss comes off the DL.
Jul 23 - 1:40 AM

Tyler Lyons pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings out of the pen Friday against the Dodgers.

Lyons appeared likely to start for the Cardinals on Sunday, but that should be off the table after 53 pitches tonight. They'll probably call up a minor leaguer.
Jul 23 - 1:37 AM

Two days after starting, Bud Norris took a loss in relief after giving up a homer in the 16th inning Friday against the Cardinals.

Norris pitched a scoreless 15th, but he gave up the homer with one out in the 16th. It's unclear if he'll make his next start as scheduled on Tuesday, though he should have sufficient time to recover.
