Red Sox activated LHP Roenis Elias from the 60-day disabled list; optioned him to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Elias is recovered from his intercostal and lat injuries and has already made some starts at Triple-A. The 29-year-old left-hander has not made an appearance at the major league level in 2017, but he could join the Red Sox in a long relief role when rosters expand in September.

Red Sox designated RHP Noe Ramirez for assignment.

The move clears a 40-man roster spot for Roenis Elias, who has been activated off the 60-day disabled list and optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket. Ramirez was sporting a decent 3.51 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, and 57/16 K/BB ratio in 48 2/3 innings of relief this season with Pawtucket and could draw some interest on waivers.

Ryan Goins (forearm) is in the Blue Jays' starting lineup on Thursday against the Rays.

Going was removed from Wednesday night's game after Rays infielder Daniel Robertson stepped on his left arm in the sixth inning, but he avoided a serious injury. Goins is starting at shortstop and batting eighth Thursday versus Tampa Bay right-hander Chris Archer.

Kevin Pillar is absent from the Blue Jays' lineup Thursday against the Rays.

It appears to be a normal day of rest for Pillar. Ezequiel Carrera will start in center field and bat sixth Thursday versus Tampa Bay right-hander Chris Archer.

Jose Bautista will get the day off Thursday.

Nori Aoki is starting in right field and hitting leadoff versus Rays right-hander Chris Archer. Joey Bats owns a weak .214/.324/.396 overall batting line in 2017, though he has tallied 20 home runs, 53 RBI, and 75 runs scored.

Lance McCullers (back) threw another bullpen session Thursday at Minute Maid Park.

It was his second mound workout since he landed on the disabled list in late July with back discomfort. McCullers should soon advance to live batting practice and could be ready for a minor league rehab assignment by the middle of next week. The young starter is tracking toward an early-September return.

Yasmany Tomas has experienced another setback with his right groin.

He's off to Philadelphia to meet with a specialist. Tomas has been out since the first week of June and there is obviously no timetable for his return at this point. He could very well be done for the year. Tomas, 26, is owed $13.5 million in 2018, $15.5 million in 2019, and $17 million in 2020.

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo announced Thursday that Rubby De La Rosa needs Tommy John surgery.

De La Rosa has been plagued by arm issues all season, logging just 7 2/3 total innings of relief at the major league level. This will be the second Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery of his career and his rehab will likely last through the entire 2018 campaign.
